I have caught them on up to 15# but that was bass fishing.

When I target Sunfish on fly, it's normally 6# fluoro

8# mono for topwater because there is a lot of bass by catch.

I wondered if 8 lbs would work. I've been doing some drifting in rocky areas for bream and 4 lbs line it too light. I think 8 lbs would be perfect.

My standard weight line for bluegill is 8 lb Blue Stren. I have gone down to 4 for special purposes.

The main reason I use 8 lb is it's easier to manage, tying knots, etc.

I use 6 lbs because its easy to cast but 8 is also good.

I have switched to 10 pound braided PowerPro. It is the same diameter as 2 pound mono.

PowerPro braided line is strong, easy to cast and flexible. It has two downsides: it is easier to tangle and harder to untangle, and it requires different knots. It is also very expensive line but it lasts well.

Before going to braided line I used 6 pound mono.

Everything I read is that bluegill/sunfish are line shy so I've tried to size down. I've used 4 lb. and 6 lb. monofilament on my light spinning gear. I'm currently using 6 lb. mono but have been experimenting with fluorocarbon and hybrid lines.

On my fly rod I use either 4 lb. mono or 6 lb. fluorocarbon tippet for underwater flies. I use 8 lb. mono tippet for my top water flies.

My big question is still, Do bluegill see a mono line better than the supposedly invisible fluorocarbon? Or is the actual displacement of the water by any line a factor?

J-Moe, I don't know. I like the way 4 lbs line casts on my spinning set up. I seem to get more bites with 4 lbs mono. I used to have fluoro, but it seemed to twist up too bad for me.

I've caught may bluegillon 6 lb hi-vis line, but the 4 lb. seems out out perform it every time.

I actually seemed to have more success using 4 lb. mono tippets than 6 lb. fluorocarbon tippets, but I can't quantify that.

I tried the 6 lb. p-line on my spinning gear and it twisted so bad I had to cut it off after 2 fishing trips. I bought some other pure fluorocarbon but haven't tried it yet.

P-Line website

We do use the 6lb when 4lb is out of stock, but have caught numerous ten pound plus fish of various species accidentally with the four. It's extraordinarily strong for the diameter.

It was the standard p-line on sale at Gander mountain. Right away, while stringing it up, I could tell it was extremely springy. It twisted very badly after just a few casts. I didn't try the premium p-line. Thanks for the info.
