I like a 5/6 wt, but I see a lot of guys going with rods half that size. What about you?

Honestly I use fly rod blanks and use regular spinning reel seats, eyes and such. Fly rod blanks make good panfish rods.

I use ultra lights for the sunfish. Fly rod blanks with regular spinning reel seats? Interesting. hmmm Do you have a picture of your rig? thumb

7'6" 3wt 98% of the time...although nothing wrong with a 5wt. for any applications xcept carp/salt...I fished a 4wt. for a month and did not especially like it. anything less than a 3wt. starts getting iffy with our south central TX SE winds. I will use my 6wt. if I elect to use a weighted fly its still a blast with a decent sized bluegill.

I use a 4 weight for fishing subsurface flies and a 5 weight for poppers. I usually carry both rods. I found out the hard way that I have far better feel fishing light subsurface flies with my 4 weight than I do with my 5 weight. I was missing a number of very light bluegill bites with my cheap, stiff 5 weight. After seeing significant improvement in feel I'm thinking about investing in a 3 weight.

6' 2 wt or tenkara rod, honestly.

Actually, you know what? If I were targeting ONLY sunnies/cichlids, my tenkara rod wouldn't leave my hand. Those guys are CRAZY for kebari.

Yeah, here are a couple videos. First here's the channel catfish version of the concept using an 9 wt fly rod blank:

Here's the bluegill version using a 5/6 wt fly rod blank:

Catfish Rod building playlist uses the same principle, thinking of doing a bluegill rod building class this winter: Catfish Rod Building 101

Got a bunch of footage today catching channel cats with the 5/6 wt fly rod blank with 4 lbs test line. Fun! fun!

Enjoyed the videos. Looks like a lot of rod play on both the catfish and the Bluegills. Thanks for sharing. coolio

I've never thought about using my 6. Maybe I should try it.
I use a 4 a lot.
Recently a buddy turned me on to using a 2.
I absolutely love it. It's a blast. Shorter casts, but much more accurate.
No arm fatigue at all. Can do it all day.
Every bite is a good bite. A truly good bite is a war. Tons of fun!
The 2 may never be the only one I take, but it's gotten to be one that goes with me every time.

A regular bass guy would have yanked this dude in and flipped him back in the water.
By the time I landed it on my 2, I was ready to put her on the trailer and go home and take a nap.
I'm fishing water not known for big fish.
Sizing what I'm using to what I'm normally catching has made small water fishing an absolute blast.

This is just too much fun!

4 or a 5! Both have worked well for me.
