Casting ligs or Road Runners for Crappie. My favorite way to catch Crappie. Usually do this around rocks, riprap or steep drops. You can do it over brush but you lose a lot of jigs until you get good at it. The hardest thing to teach beginners at this is to never reel the lure. Cast out, let the lure sink on a fairly tight line until it reaches bottom (or has a fish on it). Pick up the lure with the rod a couple of feet and let it fall back to the bottom reeling up the slack line as it falls. Repeat until lure is straight down. Stop and fish it still for a few seconds before reeling it up. Most strikes occur while its falling back to the bottom. Remember you are never reeling the lure, only taking up slack. In the springtime this also works well along bare banks. Watch your line carefully, a lot of the strikes will be very light at times.

Great tips Ernest. thumb

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Great tips Ernest. I wish you were still guiding or would make another video. I learn a lot from listening to you.

I don't guide but I still book teaching trips on and off. Can't seem to totally quit. I just posted about it.

What's the best time of year to use this technique?

Greasebath caught quite a few over a brush pile yesterday while I was jigging them up off the bottom.
The crappie now are all up and down the water column in the areas of the lakes that the turn over run it's course

I like to throw them into sunshine and let them fall on a tightline back into the shade of the structure I'm fishing.
