I agree with Chuck. I have made many tests when the sunfish were biting on every cast using small segments of nightcrawlers. When I switched to artificials the bite slowed or stopped. I have tried most of the popular small lures. The only time I would recommend artificial baits, including Gulp, is when worms of some type are not available.

The only bait that will beat worms is crickets.

I carry these three baits. They all work very well but one will usually be preferred on a given day --
often a quite significant preference. Some days it is a night and day difference.

1. WORMS -- I use the canadian night crawlers that Academy sells. Just a pinch will do. Brown wigglers are
probably a little better bait but their goo is very sticky. The canadian's goo washes off easily. The canadians
also survive for a long time in the fridge. A month or longer.

2. SALMON -- I get it at the HEB fresh fish counter and cut it up into small bluegill bites. Salmon is a very oily fish.
The scent disperses rapidly in the water and they come to it like a magnet. I buy this fresh for each trip or use
thawed salmon.

3. MAGGOTS -- (Blue bottle fly larvae. Also called spikes) I put 2 or 3 of these on a #6 Owner Mosquito hook. They stay on the hook well and I can usually catch
a couple of fish before having to rebait. I buy maggots on-line. They will live in the fridge at 36F for a couple of months.
If they spend much time at room temperature they will pupate and soon become a fly. So I just take what I need for
the day and keep the rest in the fridge. (P.S. if you are going to use maggots you need needle sharp hooks. Their skin
is quite tough and if your hook is not hypodermic sharp you will tear the maggot rather than penetrate it. Hence the
Owner Mosquito hooks or some other ultrasharp fine wire hook)

I had those BSF larvae in my compost pile. Didn't use them though since they do such a great job of breaking down scraps. If they're still in my pile, I'll try them out.

I like to striping flies in the fall cause the fish are active & fattening up. Topwater stuff also

Pretty much don't target Sunfish in the Winter. May get an odd big one bass fishing though.
