Bought a 2014 boat from out of state and the DCTA is a pain to deal with on the trailer, they won't accept a notorized weigh slip letter from the manufacturer. There telling me I have to get it weighed and inspected. The trailer weighs 1140 according to the manufacture. mad Anyone know the closest weigh station to denton?

Was pleasantly surprised when I went to register my boat and trailer here in Alabama. The state doesn't register boat trailers. I loved it when my $55 tag fee from Denton county was forwarded to me last month and I got to throw it in the trash.

OK, you said you were told it had to be inspected and weighed. Evidently it is rated for 4501 GVWR or higher. If so, that is the law.

Yep, just went thru this. It's the trailer weight loaded not empty. Will need to have weighed with the boat on trailer. If it is over 4500 pounds, then you will have to get trailer inspected. Cost is $7.

There is an exemption if the total weight is below 4,500 pounds, even if it has been registered to be over 4,500 in the past. Some offices are real ash-holes about giving the exemption, some have no issue with it.

Update, took the day off got trailer inspected and then off to the weigh station.
went to DCTA office lady comes back and says I need to weigh the trailer with the boat off of it
I can't accept this weigh slip. I called my boat manufacturer and they Faxed me a copy of the boats MSO.
They accepted that but said the state could kick it back. The boat & trailer weighed 4020 lbs.
The Trailer is rated for 5000 lbs. they said I will have to get it inspected when I renew the registration.

The tax assessor/collector is an elected public official. I would go around the staff and schedule an appointment directly with them to discuss the law and the actual requirements.

Man I'm glad I live in a rural county with a lot of common sense.
I took mine in the lady at the tax office said what does the trailer weigh, I told her 1400 lbs and she said no problem. Took 5 minutes and no inspection.

Most vehicle inspection stations can inspect trailers. I would call and check before taking it in.
