My brother is looking to get a decent spinning rod and reel to fish the channels and bays. He goes with his friends who have a boat. Any recommendations as to size and brand will be appreciated, probably 1-3 trips a year. His old Zebco 773 is getting too much of a workout when they go.

I haven't fished spinning tackle in the gulf gut wi;; on my next trip. I talked to a guy with at least half dozen spinning rigs set up for trout, redfish and flounder.

He uses a variety of reels all in the 2000 series size (about 120 yards/10# mono ) but he uses 30# braid with a mono leader.

I would say get a Shimano Sienna, Sonora or other model in the $35-75 range and match it with a good Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod in the6.5- 7 foot range. He can get a good set up for $100 or less.

Depends on the budget. Diawa t series rods in 7ft mh 8-17 lb are what I used and also Diawa inshore specia. All of my spinning rods are 7-7 ft 2 in and rigged with reels that will hold 200 yds of 10 lb line. you hit a big bull red (40+ inches) you will need a lot of line and smooth drag. for the reels penn sargus are nice. I have upgraded to the diawa procyon reels. about $150 each. a Penn spinfisher will last forever also. I have had 1 since I was 16 and Im now 40. dang thing still works fine. I spool mine with 10 lb big game and use a 20 lb floro leader. I think I have 7-8 set ups like that now so they are all tied different that way I don't waste time tying new lures on I just grab and go until I find what they want.

You can spend as much or as little as you want-and still catch plenty of fish. My gear consists of shimano 2500 series spinning reels paired with all star 6.5 medium rods. Reels like sedonas or sonoras are high quality and med. priced. rods in the 49-69 dollar range work great and can catch any thing that swims in the tx. bays. Now for the kicker ,get some 15 lb. power probraid and you are ready for the salt,i use 40 lb.big game as a leader-go getem!

he must have better friends than I do, if somebody (other than a kid) showed up to go fishing with the jerks I fish with, with a ZEBCO, youd never hear the end of it.
