I'm new to the forum and checked the search, but didn't find the topic. I'm looking for a place to take my 75 year old dad fishing in the DFW area. He lives in McKinney so the closer to that the better. He needs to use a walker to go any distance so I'm trying to find a place with a dock or easy access to the water to take him where it is safe and a short walk from the car. He had a heart attack last year and has limited mobility, but he has always loved to fish. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a nice cat fishing and bass spot in Denton Texas. It's about 50 minutes from your location, might be far for you or not, I don't know.

Check out this link and you'll see some opportunities for fishing. The spot I was recommending was South Lakes Park Pond. It's stocked about every two to four weeks with catfish, and stocked with rainbow trout throughout the winter.

Hope this helped!

Squirrels,

Thanks for the link. I live near Austin, but will be up in a few weeks so I will drive out and check it out while I'm up there. I don't mind driving him a ways to get to a place.

Maybe some of the fishing barges at some of the marinas might be good. They'll be covered so he won't have to deal with the sun.

Bobby,

I would think there should be. My brother and I took his boat out to Ray Hubbard the last week when I was up, but the catwalk to the barge was about 50 yards, without rails, and rough which is a shame since they have a fish house. The last thing I would need is for him to fall in and me to try to fish him out. If anyone knows of a marina which would be easy and safe I would give it a try. I know of several places here in central Texas where there are docks/fishing piers that are close to parking and relative easy to get out on, but I'm just not familiar with the lakes up around DFW. I've been scouting the lakes on Google Earth looking for a pier close to parking, but haven't found one yet.

Although it is a bit far Lake Mineral Wells has a lighted handicapped pier right off a paved parking lot. The fishing is usually good for crappie and catfish.

Thanks Smithaven! I'll look up the location. Something like that is what I'm looking for. Most of the State Parks located on lakes where I'm at have a lighted pier that is relatively easy to get onto, but most of what I'm finding up near DFW is boat ramps only, though Bonham State Park appears to have a pier. My dad loves to fish for crappie.

Ray Roberts isn't too far away from McKinney.

Lake Lewisville fishing barge has rails on their walk and is very user friendly for a walker. Another that would be a longer drive, but I have seen lots of walkers and a few wheelchairs at is Highview Marina at Bardwell in Ennis

Thanks Forsanmedic,
I fished Lake Lewisville with my grandfather when I was a kid. I'll check them both out when I come back up.
