What say you for a good crank bait reel for square bills and shallow diving? What ratio, brand etc.

For squarebills, I use a 6.3:1.. Or something close to that. And the reel is either a shimano curado or citica. Great reels!

Shimano Curado I

The Curado is a fantastic reel! Sleek, durable and lightweight. I just switched to Shimano from Abu Garcia and I'm so pleased. Wish I would've switched years ago.

I like the Chronach E better than the Curado E. Bigger spool=Longer casts for me.

I know you guys will probably cringe at this but I recently cleaned a lubed an Abu Black Max and used it for cranks this past weekend. Worked perfectly! 6.3:1 btw

my favorite 2 reels for cranks are Revo Winch (5:3:1) and Lews TH1 (6:4:1)...both have deep spools and are the perfect speed!

I use Ardent Apex Pro. The small light weight design is what I look for. There are no bad reels out there today. I think it just comes down to what is comfortable. On reaction baits I use 6.3:1.

Eesh. . .I have a black max and a couple of silver max reels that are just complete dog scat. The black max is at least serviceable. . .those silver max reels are so worthless. Worst casting reel I've ever owned. I just cannibalized them for the handles.

I use Lew's for cranking. A few different ones. Main thing for me is a 6.3:1 for shallow and something around 5:1 for deep cranking.

I use a Lew's TP1H on a Reel Time Rods custom crankbait rod and just love it. The rod is about $200 and you can get the reel online for about $125 now. I know it's a little pricey but I can now throw one all day and not hurt the next day. That means a lot when your old like me. LOL
