I just switched from Lowrance HDS electronics to Garmin 93sv units. I have just one regret, that is I didn't do it sooner. The Garmin's 9" retail for $1199 less rebate and have 2D sonar, side scan and down scan. The basic Lake Vu maps are some of the best maps I have seen. The GPS is spot on. These units are really easy to use. To connect the 2 units you will need 2 16ga wires. That is all. Highly recommend.

Do any of the DV and SV units have in-hull mounted transducers? I don't see that they are anything but transom mount or a big block mounted on the bottom of the boat.

No. Side scan requires full view of each side plus vertical. Garmin uses one transducer for everything while Lowrance uses two.

What about Humminbird? I thought I saw everything was on one transducer as well. How hard is it to install the bottom thru hull and where is the best place to mount it? Or is the transom unit ok to use? I think I'm just afraid of the bottom mounted one getting hung up or messed up if I'm up in the trees etc.

A shoot through tducer is for temp and 2d only and for fiberglass boats (there is a tducer that will work for aluminum) It is mounted on the inside of the boat and usually around the bilge pump area. A shoot through will not produce si/di. Only a tducer mounted on the transom or trolling motor will provide si/di

Just mount on transom. If mounted correctly, it will bump up if it hits something. You just push it back into position. I think that there is even a spring one that will move it back on it'8s own.

I've gone thru plenty of stumps at idle speed and never damaged one. Now if I strike one at speed, it might break it but I'd be more worried at that point about my lower unit.

Thousands are mounted on the transom. The only reason that I see for a thru hull is of you can't get a reading on plane without it.

Ok, it obviously is easier to mount on the transom so if others have been using it that way I can too. My other question, I guess wasn't being understood, does Humminbird have everything on a single transducer or do they use separate temp sensor. I'm trying to make it as painless an install as possible.

Yes, Humminbird does have a all in one transducer. HDSI 180 is the all in one transducer for the core units, except for the 899 which is a compact transducer, if you go the 899 route you can upgrade to the hdsi for a few more dollars

A few more dollars is actually close to $80 but that's what a lot od guys do just to get the better image.

Moneywise.... Id get the biggest HB (1199) screen available. Not touch screen but easy to read, use, & see. Then mount on bow with SI transducer on trolling motor first. It would be more beneficial in fishing now. Then i would save money & buy a 899 or larger for console. Then ethernet port connect the 2 units. On a budget (i know what you mean, believe me) i would get the biggest & best on front & buy bow unit later. David at Shut Up & Fish had sn 1199 on sale at $1299 i think. I may sell my 899 i bought from him last spring & buy another 1199. Good luck with all. David is a stand up guy & very knowledgeable in electronics. Call him & discuss which way to go with it. He WILL treat you right.

That's pretty much where I am except I have a 1199 at the console, a 999 at the bow and a Riptide TM with I-pilot Link, all networked. All information can be shared between heads except the chart card info, and either unit can use either or the same transducer. You can run the TM with a remote or from either display. The front FF is mounted on an adjustable pedestal so the person in the front seat can adjust it to his preference. The networking thing is about the slickest thing since crushed ice. I would love to swing a 360 but it just isn't in the cards.

I bought a 360 & am eager to install it. I will be selling my 899 Head unit & buying an 1199 for use at the bow with 360/si/di/ when different situations apply. Will move 999 to console. Also will be installing a Y cable to glassed in ducer for getting readings at console while at speed.
