Can anyone help out with a snake identification? I was mowing in a field about 35 yards from a pond when I came across this snake which happened to slither under the mower bolt . Unfortunately I could not find the head so identification is hard. I thought it was a water moccasin (cottonmouth) but now not sure. I only have limited pictures, so here a top and bottom view....

It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

If you still have it, the body that is, look just below its anal opening. If it has two scales side-by-side down to its tail, it is a non-venomous water snake; if it has a single scale all the way across its belly leading down to its tail, it is a water moccasin.

Looks a lot like the cotton mouth I had the displeasure of meeting on my porch. The head is best for 100% ID.

Can't be certain, but pretty sure that is a cottonmouth. Back, coloration and belly markings say cottonmouth to me. Wish I could see the head.

No doubt, cottonmouth. I've killed almost 400 cottonmouths in the past 3 years at my camp...only about 4 copperheads, 2 chicken snakes and a dozen or so water snakes. I have no love for those sombitches...my neighbor leaves his perch traps half out of the water and catches about 10 a week in the summer-all cottonmouths.

I grew up in the swamps of Louisiana with "cottonmouth a-plenty." I'd say that is a cottonmouth.
