Out of Galveston, you have either the New Buccaneer (Galveston Party Boats) or the Capt John(Williams Party Boats). I much prefer GPB for various reasons (I don't fish Williams). You can see their reports on their web site or at 360tuna,com . Out of Freeport, you have the Bluefin that sometimes runs open trips. Nice boat that runs limited loads but more expensive. Next closest place is Port Aransas on the middle coast. You have three choices there. Check 360tuna.com .BTW, I think you will find the fishing and the boat operations somewhat different from Cali.

LOL "somewhat different"

DayOne is going easy on ya. West Coast boats are a gentleman's trip. This is like camping on a boat.

Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

Thanks for your response. With regard to ca verse gulf. ya its hard for me to wrap my head around the number of people on trip, the way they assign spots on the boat and no live bait. But the prices are about the same. I am an old guy but I think I will go on the Galveston boat despite no bunks. The John boat operation is just to weird. IE The fish rep[orts always yesterdays news very late late and the format is just plain bizzare.

PGC, you'll find a couple old California tuna fishermen on this board (me and lite-liner at least). Yes, it's a whole different world.

First, it's night fishing.

Second, you're mostly dropping heavy jigs rather than surface fishing live bait. Sometimes you'll use whole herring or cut chunk bait on a flouro leader, but you're still using a fairly heavy egg sinker to get it down deeper.

Third, when there's daytime trolling for tuna, forget about coordinated trolling teams taking turns. Every man for himself.

But, once you get used to it, it's fun. Yellowfin will hit surface lures, so get yourself a heavy duty spinning rig for casting. There's virtually no open deck space for casting a conventional reel, so you'll be underhanding it.

I've tried the various boats along the Gulf coast for tuna trips. I prefer the Scat Cat out of them all.

A few other observations. Capt John doesn't allow overhead casting but New Bucc does, up on the bow. Quite a bit of room. The New Bucc has a live well if you bring your own bait (either caught before hand or purchased at a bait shop). Most YFT are not caught on jigs, but on poppers, swimbaits or chunks. Lots of blackfin on jigs. BTW, the ScatCat is a slightly smaller version of the New Bucc, made by the same people. Has a better interior layout, IMO, except for the hot food. It's also much slower.

One thing I forgot. The assigned spots don't count for much. They are really only used for the bottom fishing and even then, they aren't set in stone. They are mainly used on the tuna trips to get your fish at the end of the day. If you are assigned number 77, then all your fish will be numbered 77. During the tuna fishing, it's wide open.

If you go on a trip get some halco lures. The lures are swim baits and cast very well .The lures are hot for tuna

Thanks for all the helpful feedback. I am planning on going on the new buccaneer on one of the two trips scheduled in October. I will take halco lures and the rest of the usual suspects. I hope to meet some of you there.

We will have to agree to disagree. Check the fish counts.
