just curious if anyone else is struggling as much as I am on Ray Roberts- not asking for gps coordinates or anything smile

I grew up fishing stock ponds, backwater sloughs and bayous in SW Arkansas. This is my first year fishing a "big" body of water and the learning curve is real. I've tried main lake points, humps, the first, second, and third parts of lick, wolf, and Indian. Cuts, coves, bends... Moving baits, plastics, drop shots... I'm catching fish (mostly the same small stuff everyone's been talking about) but I can't seem to find a consistent pattern that produces more than 1-2 keeper fish a day.

So- am I alone or is the struggle just as real for y'all?

Thanks grin

PS- if anyone wants to take me under their wing I'd gladly trade gas money for an education. I'm pretty ignorant about fishing Ray Bob.

You probably picked one of the toughest lakes in the state to learn on . It is a brutal lake at times . Getting your confidence up is important as a new fisherman . Try some other lakes to make this happen.

Hearing it's one of the harder lakes actually makes me feel a lot better. My work schedule and home address don't make it easy to make it out to another lake unfortunately. I live 10 minutes from the Sanger ramp though. What lakes would you recommend?

RR can be a humbling lake. Tore them up last weekend there, but most were dinks. There were many trips before that that were less than stellar. You are paying dues now. Keep chugging knowing that you will crack the code eventually.

I started bass fishing 3 years ago. I started with bank fishing then a kayak and now I have a small 14ft v bottom that I started to use on lake Lewisville. I learned a lot this season and have consistently caught 2 to 3 pound fish each outing on Lewisville along with a handful of the 6 inch specials everyone else is catching. My best this season is a 6.4 pounder - I know it's not a hog, but I feel I am doing well for just starting to fish on a big lake. I'd recommend giving Lewisville a shot.

If you catch a fish each time on ray roberts your not doing to bad, just keep trying it's a very hard lake to have a consistent pattern figured out.

I personally hate rr and it feels the same about me, that is going to change soon though because I'm about to be spending alot of time out there.

I was out there today. Not a cloud in the sky with 6mph wind out of the east/north. Tough conditions on a challenging lake. All I caught were healthy 1-2lbers (a couple maybe not even 1lb) My fishing buddy caught a 4.5lber, with the rest being 1-2 lbers. Heard the crappie were biting well today though.

@JoshJones1984: Dude, it's a tough lake. I affectionately refer to it as Rat Retardberts...fished it hard and almost exclusively for the first two years I had my boat & got skunked more times than I'd like to admit. I started going a little farther east lately (Fork, Monticello, Athens) and magically remembered how to catch fish again grin

I would suggest a more forgiving body of water to cut your teeth on and gain some confidence, however, this year's high water and good spawn could change Rat Retardberts' stingy attitude in the future.

Not sure I agree with Branden. You might catch a big one but Jan/Feb is much tougher than Oct. I suggest you hire Dannie Golden. You will learn a lot.

I always start laughing when I see posts like this! One reason is that lake is my favorite lake to fish, I love that lake!! It is a very seasonal pattern lake. During the summer the night bite is awesome, the best bite is either early morning, dusk, or past midnight!! I'll fish all night long during the summer. At night during the summer is when they are usually feeding and you can catch them pretty good. Right now you need to find the bait fish that's where you'll find the bass. Use your electronics if your not seeing bait move until you do. If the fish are suspended those are the hardest to catch look for fish feeding on the bait fish or on the bottom, those are easier to catch. I'm catching them on big baits like 10-16 inch worms, big bulky jigs, or crankbaits(8 & 10XD's). Now that it's starting to get cooler they won't be out deep they will be following the shad and feeding aggressively for the winter. It's the same every year!!! I've caught more 7-9lb bass this year than any other year. I don't fish it during the winter cause I'm murdering ducks on it during that time. But from March-September I'm on it 3-4+ days a week. Hope this helps a little. Here is one I caught recently... 7.19lbs

October is a great month on Roberts for quality bass. They are in the creeks and feeding aggressively. Below is. 9.6 I caught in a creek a few years back. C-rig Fluke in 6 FOW.
