Tell me what you've experienced. Any advice and all comments would be appreciated. Best time of the year? Best spot to camp? Must haves for the trip? Things you could/should probably leave at home?

Never been below Toledo Bend, But I've made a couple of trips on the stretch above Toledo Bend near Carthage, from Hwy 59 down to FM 2517. I went in early spring during the sand bass run. If the river's not too high, there are a lot of big white sandbars all the way down the river starting a few miles below Hwy 59, plenty of driftwood for campfires. There's a small waterfall (Black Shoals) across the entire width of the river at about 3 miles downstream of 59 that you'll have to portage. I've only done it at low water levels.
I imagine that once fall really gets here it would be beautiful, lots of big trees on the banks. I found it to be a beautiful, relaxing float. Take insect repellent. Lots of hooks, its a snaggy river. Catfishing is excellent. Leave the old lady at home. FM 2517 to River Ridge would be a good trip to try, especially during the spring run if the water's not too high. It's about 9 miles.
Here's a video I made of one of the trips. There's a helicopter at the end dipping water out of the river to put out a forest fire. Hope you have a great trip.
