one letter away from Danger!
As already stated, if that close, I would look at the dealerships and the warm fuzzy you get from them. Everyone that has purchased a new boat had to have in the shop for one thing or another, getting it back, ready to go and in a reasonable time frame can be the difference in a positive or negative in your boat owning experience.

Bass pro didn't buy out ranger, they partnership with them like cabelas did to sell Rangers. Might want to check on that one. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Bass Pro Group announced today an agreement to acquire Fishing Holdings LLC, a manufacturer of fishing boats that include Ranger Boats and the Stratos and Triton boat brands, from Platinum Equity. http://www.bassmaster.com/news/bass-pro-shops-buys-ranger-stratos-and-triton

how much older are we talking about ? I was looking at buying a 99 triton but have heard a lot of chinewalking complaints I had a new 98 TR-21, it was a booger bear to drive, now that I look back on it I am sure it was not set up properly, the engine was probably 2 inches too low in the water, they get squirrelly when not set up properly. Triton TR's were performance hulls they do not have wedge built into the rear of the hull to help inexperienced drivers prevent chine walk. Most boats Rangers, Skeeters, Legends ect... have wedge built into the hull to make it easy to drive but scrubs off speed. Tritons and other performance bass boats and race hulls are a handful to drive for the inexperienced drivers. A good driver will make it look easy. Just takes seat time in one. I drive a Triton TR21 and you will never know it Chine Walks. But somebody else with no experience driving these types of hulls will have their hands full. Hope this helps:) Oh I know how to drive a boat, I did not know how to drive that 98 model but I still say it was not set up properly, the late model Tritons are easy to drive. The late model ones have wedge built into the rear of the hull, that is why they are easy for you to drive. The only newer Triton Hull that don't is the 21HP. All the X series have wedge. The older 1998+ TR20 & 21 are the same hull design as the HP series. That is why they run faster and are harder to drive. They are a performance hull.

I have a 21 HP and a 21 TRX which has the same hull, no problem driving either of them, they do not run as fast as the 2010 and older X boats, I heard that Mercury had detuned the 250 pro xs.

X boats are not as fast. I own a Triton and have driven many different ones. The 21hp with a 250 Pro XS and a 27p Fury will run 82 mph;)

I have a TR-22 and have rode in similar length rangers. The ride in the big water is much better in the Triton. The boat is supremely solid and dry. I know I would love a ranger too however with the criteria you mentioned above the Triton would be the way to go.
