I've thought about going to one of the clearer lakes around here and anchoring my kayak so I could snorkel around a little. Was thinking about Wheeler Branch because the clarity is so high. Thoughts? Any other lake recommendations?

That'd be where I'd go. And, on weekends over the summer, there are quite a lot of divers out there on a regular basis. At least twice, I have seen either police or firemen out there scuba diving. I suppose either for practice or getting certs related to their work.

Most dive near the buoys where a bus or something has been sunk; but, a month ago, 3 or 4 of them took off from the beach south of the boat ramp and floated over then did their diving near the spillway. I think they were purposely diving at a deep water site.

Have never dove from my kayaks but i don't see why you couldn't. Wheeler Branch would be perfect for it. They sank that bus specifically for diving and dive classes.

The only time I ever dove in was when my GoPro fell off in Lake Grapevine. It was an unsuccessful attempt, but the water was nice! I think anchoring up and diving in on purpose would be fun. I've never even considered that.

Make sure you bring a dive flag if you plan on doing so.

I will. I really want to get one of the new Ninja snorkel masks and try it out. Might do that in a few weeks!

Gosh, I hope I am there that day, Rhino, when you dive!

I can show you where my anchor is near the dam, tons of lures equivalent to abot a Bass Pro Shop under water. Ha!

The other thing we see out there are swimmers being followed by canoes and kayaks spotting them. One group swam from the swim dock area all the way to the island, then to the point opposite the island where a road used to be I think, near those bumps, then back to the island and back to shore.

Lake Murray in Oklahoma is not far and is a diving hot spot. Texoma was clear and Possum Kingdom but not sure about either lakes after the spring rains. Sam Rayburn is a good place to dive and the fishing is good too.

I sailed my Outback in the Laguna Madre and then anchored up and started snorkeling. I noticed my yak seemed to be a bit farther away than I remembered when I surfaced. I checked a few minutes later and it was much farther away. That is when I noticed that my sail had unfurled and my yak was heading for Corpus Christi. I'm lucky that I had my swim fins on because I wouldn't have caught up to my yak otherwise. The wind was so strong it was just dragging my anchor along. I tied myself to my yak and floated along with it after that learning experience. Lesson; be sure that your yak is "securely" anchored if you plan to swim away from it.
I recently got scuba certified and I have dove Wheeler Branch but not from my yak, we just swam in. I may try scuba yakin' in the future.

I dropped a St. Croix rod with a revo wench on it in about 13 feet. first thing I did was toss a marker then I circled back around anchored up and after about 30 minutes of trying to hook it with a spoon, down I went...

Hey FWBanger...

What is the visibility at Wheeler Branch?

Have you been to Clear Springs (Terrel)? If so, how do the diving conditions compare to Wheeler Branch?

Thanks,
Craig

That was almost a bad story!

Still House near Belton has a dive shop on the water and does regular dives, tank refills, rentals etc. Yak diving has been going on there for a bit. Not super frequent but I know a couple of guys that do.

I've dove both Wheeler Branch and Clear Springs. Visibility on a good day was about the same in both, about 15 feet. Wheeler Branch has nice facilities, is closer to me and has a much lower entry fee. They both have submerged platforms. Clear Springs has more sunken objects to look at, air refills and no fishing allowed. If you don't need air refills and aren't worried about getting snagged by someone trolling a deep diving crank bait then Wheeler Branch is very nice.

BTW, I did have a diver down flag displayed on my yak while snorkeling in the Laguna Madre. I rigged up a flag so that it would fit in my rod holder. I somehow lost the crossbar that keeps it spread out but I've since made another one.
