First,
Hello I'm new here. I moved to Texas recently (grew up in Minnesota), and I'm fairly new to fly fishing (started when I went to school in Missouri, fishing for panfish/small lg mouth bass)
I have a 9' 5wt Hobbs Creek [2 piece] (BPS), but I'm looking for a new rod. I want a TFO BVK, pretty set on that, I've wanted to have a TFO for a while . (I Have no clue what reel I want yet)
I cant decide between 6 or 8wt (Don't say 7). I lean towards the 8wt. I want to fish for large mouth bass, continue to fish on the brazos, and I would also like to take the occasional trip down to port o'connor or the sort for redfish. I don't really know where to fish yet, but the brazos has been great the couple of times a went, though I'd like to target a bit bigger size fish. I'm sure I'll end up getting an 8 and 6 within the next year, but I'm just not sure which one I will end up using more. I do want it to be a 4 piece.
Reason why I'm wanting an upsize is casting in windy conditions, and some of the clousers were a bit tough to get to turn over on my 5wt. Also for some bigger poppers. Also a little more backbone and really want to go after Large Mouth.
Waders and a Kayak are in the near future. No boat.
Any advice, thoughts or suggestions would be great.
Have a great day!

I know you said not to say 7 but I have two TFO 9 foot 7's that I bass fish with and I love them. I have an eight weight but it can get pretty heavy after a couple of hours of blind casting ( I usually leave it for saltwater sight casting). But, I guess if I had to pick, I would lean towards the eight verses the six. There are some casting instructors on here that can give way better advice than I can. Just wanted to say hi and welcome to Texas.

If you already have a 5wt, I'd get the 8 wt. You'd be able to cover a wider range of fishing conditions with a 5 and an 8, than you could with a 5 and a 6.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard! I have a few BVK rods and recently got a TFO Impact. Recommend you find a place that has both and try them. Spend most of my fishing time drifting rivers ( drifted Shenandoah in Va 2 days ago) and have gone to mainly 5 or 6 weights. Lindy

If you already have a 5 wt and want to add a second rod, then an 8 wt is a better choice than a 6 wt, especially if you want to go hit saltwater. I have a 5 and an 8, and I use the 8 wt for bigger and weighted flies, the 5 wt for whatever is small enough to throw on it.

Thank you all for the replies. I'll be picking up an 8wt in the near future. I'm guessing a six wont be far behind anyways. The more the merrier.

Alright, I got the 8wt BVK Rod (9').
Need some help on the reel/line.
Some reels ive considered
TFO BVK, Allen Kraken, Ross Reels Evolution LT (Or animas), Nautilus FWX, Hardy Ultralite DD. I was hoping to spend less than $300, but with fly line included, that looks a bit tough. Doesn't have to stay below that, but I would like it to.
Again its for large mouth, striper, and the occasional redfish trip.

$300 is a good budget, but you won't need that for bass unless you are fishing salt a lot. Lamson Konics and Gurus are good and be had for less than that. I've never heard anything negative about the Allens either. Galvan reels are my fav, but they are a bit more. Between your chooses, I would go with Ross Evo or Nautilus.
As far as lines, I like Rio Outbound, but not so much the short head. I actually use Rio Pike on my 8wt for big flies. It turns overs bugs and big streamer pretty well, but I use Outbound reg on most of my rods when fishing for bass, striper, and pike. But that's just me. I throw big stupid flies..
Check out Stillwatersfly.com They usually give you free fly line with purchase of a reel, plus free shipping.

I've looked at and like Lamson and Galvans too.
So is a tapered shooting head the ideal style like for bass ? Or at least a good rounded option.
Lamson Guru is on sale on that site now, doesn't appear to come with free line though.

Shooting heads like the Rio Outbound 30 ft head or SA Titan taper 33 1/2 head have all the weight in the front, and will turn over big or weighted flies easier. The shorter head will help as well if you have somewhat limited back cast room as well. Strip in to the beginning of the head, then one or two back casts, and let it fly. If you are mainly throwing bass bugs and such, it'll prob work just fine.
