There's definitely plenty of them around where I'm from so I think I'll give them a try. I've never used them before so I need a little help

Catfish love em. Run a shorter leader about 6" or so cause they float.

I have grabbed them off the bank, thrown them under a split weight and bobber and caught bluegill / small bass many times.

I remember one summer my friend and I would visit a big field in our neighborhood and catch dozens of grasshoppers just to toss them into a pond and watch them be shredded by bluegill.

Match the hatch. Throw one weightless in the shallows. perch will hammer the [censored] out of it in seconds

Pick one up and throw it in an area...good way to see if there are fish around.
