Picked up a tfo minmag what line is best for the 9-10 weight minimag. Mostly bass fishing but maybe occasional saltwater fishing. Saw old threads suggesting sage bass 330 grain

There are two sizes of Mini-Mag's. The larger one is called the 8/10 and it is rated for 300 to 400 grain lines, which puts you in the 10 wt range.

I like these rods with a shorter head length shooting-head style line. The Sage Bass line is (or was) a 330 grain shooting head line and it worked very well with the Mini-Mag. There are other shooting head style line available including Rio's Outbound Short, Orvis Bank Shooter, etc.

Several people have also been happy with standard 10 wt lines. My vote would be to look for a shorter head length with more of a bass taper style line. These rods are usually fished at shorter distances with really heavy flies.

I have a 10 wt SA Titan tape line (designed for casting large flies) and I noticed last night that Sierra Trading Post just put some of these lines on sale. If you want to try casting it with your rod, bring the rod out to "Texoma on the Fly" tomorrow at Lake Texoma and I'll bring that reel with me.

Rio Outbound Short has at 30 ft head and should load that rod proper. 8wt- 330gr, 9wt - 375gr.

Ok one more question I called tailwater fly to see what line they have in stock. I told them I have a Ross 8-10 wt reel and bought the big 8-10 wt minimag they advised me to go to a 390 - 400 grain line not a 330 grain line for the rod

Should I go with a heavier grain line?

Ask them if they'll let you test cast the lines and then pick the one you like best.

I use Rio outbound rated at 375 grains on my 9 wt Sage TCX, and that's a ultra fast rod. You are welcome to try it to figure out a happy medium for your rod. I also have other 8 wt lines, and heavier Skagit shooting heads up to 475 grains if you want to see how they was load your rod.

But those guys at Tailwaters know are pretty knowledgeable, it all depends on what you are comfortable casting..
