Need your opinion, I'm truck shopping. How necessary do you think it is to have a 4x4 for towing a bass boat? I've had no problems with my current 2x4 setup. I'd like some seasoned advice.

Pulled one for the last forty years with all kinds of two wheel drives. I once even used a Volkswagen beetle to pull a small boat

4x4 is not necessary. If you are buying new, get a limited slip rear axle. It is definitely worth the money without having the higher maintenance of a 4x4.

Yeah but when that time comes and you do need it,it's priceless and that time will come. Always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Buy a Chevy,we have limited slip rear locking differentials that will get you out of all but 1% of situations. And when that 1% sneeks up on you, there will surely be one of US guys with a 4x4 that will lend a helping hand. See some of our reviews and let us know if we can help you out.

No a 4x4 is not needed typically. During winter months is nice to have cause the the boat ramps may ice or some ramps get slimy during summer. Also during low water levels you may have to use non paved ramp. That's when the 4x4 comes in handy. Now in my family we keep a 4x4 at all times so I always have one, but I do use my wife's truck a 2x to pull my boat and have had few issues with hi way tread tires. I put some good at's and never slipped since then. All in all no it's not needed. And would be happy to help someone out up the ramp if time comes. I keep a tow rope.
Best thing I can tell you though for pulling anything... Get a diesel. I don't want anyone to argue with me either!

Nope. Not here either. I've had both, prefer the 2 wheel drive, w/ towing package, limited slip - and fished tournaments in N. Idaho for 6 years. Never needed it. Of course up there, in the winter - I ran studded snow tires & a 500 lb. weight in the truck bed.

I have a 4x4 and has saved me. But like others has said 2x4 should be just fine.
Thanks,
