Neither. I prefer a good quality spincast rig.
. Seventy five years of chasing the elusive sunfish.

Give me a good ultra light spinning reel combo any day. Can't beat em for the sunnies.
IGFA World Record Rio Grande Cichlid. Lake Dunlap. John 3:16 Sinner's Prayer. God forgive me a sinner. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior !

I love catching Sunfish on the fly. I have only been fly fishing for a little over a year and I am still learning. However I do love using my ultra lights on the sunnies. I would choose my ultra lights over my fly rod. That is just me.

I prefer the fly rod now. I do have several ultralights that I break out occasionally especially when the whitebass are spawning!

I enjoy both, but a UL spinning outfit works best for me, especially when using live bait/worms.

I enjoy the fly rod far more than using spinning gear. For me it's the art and enjoyment of casting; And the extreme challenge that it provides. In many circumstances I have out caught great fly fisherman 10 to 1 using my conventional gear. Then there are other times I can out fish everyone using very small flies and my fly rod. Add to this, I tie my own flies, so that only adds to the challenge and enjoyment. There's nothing like developing your own unique fly, then going out and catching more fish than you have ever caught in your life.
On the other hand there are times when using a fly rod just ain't worth it. Trying to fight the tree lined creeks or just the physical wear it takes on your body. So I often fish the creeks or go exploring with red worms and jigs. A short ultralight rod works great in these situations.

Both Use a fly-rod blank built to use a spinning-reel seat! [video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7OL9cFZZmI[/video]
Although the video is for a channel catfish rod, I use the same concept for all my bream fishing. 5/6 wt fly rod blank makes for a great bream spinning rod rig.

Both are equally great but I have come to prefer fly fishing cause I hate using live bait unless I take the kids. I don't have any lures that work well for bluegills, I can catch big green sunfish on a lot of artificial lures but the small mouth of bluegills makes it difficult.

I'm a spinning rig guy. I bought one of those fly rod starter kits awhile back and tried it once and haven't touched it since. Need to give that another try one of these days.
