The scale that appears on the left of the display is sometimes in "feet", sometimes in "sm" (statue miles?). In "feet", is that the width of the display, the distance from an edge of the screen to the cursor, the diagonal of the display, or what. Same for "sm"?

The scale is the length of the line beside the number.
The number changes according to the Zoom level you choose.

It is not a Lakemaster scale, it is the unit scale. It is the same with whatever map product you use, including the built-in mapping.
