Bought a spool of 6# CX as a compromise between 4 and 8 and to see if it copolymer line would twist less. First time I used it I thought it was great. No memory, no twist...then I noticed the outside of the line was beginning to "peel" (for like of a better term)...It basically started to shred.

Spooled fresh line and so far have tied trilene and uni knots and lost 3 fish along with the jigs and one jig broke off on the cast! These are 1/8 oz. bitsy bug jigs so proper size lures is not the issue. I checked my knots very carefully after the first loss but still lost 3 more.

Anyway, anyone else have this problem with P line CX?

I am going back to Trilene XL or Stren. I like copolymer line but apparently copolymer or at least P Line doesn't work for me.

shocked
Spooled reel with 8# Trilene XL and fished same pond this afternoon. 15 minutes later and line breaks on a cast and another jig flies across the pond! Found the same frayed/peeling/shredding line! Took another closer look at the guides and the tip has tiny grooves that i missed on first examination. Sorry P Line!

Apparently it is a Lightning rod stainless steel guide that is the cause. I dont recall ever fishing braid on this rod and I have no idea what else could groove the guide. Changed rod so if problem persists then I may just be cursed!

I use 8# PLine CX for some applications and haven't noticed any peeling problems.

You may want to check all eyes on your rod. That or your dragging it through some sharp structure. Never seen line shred without some sort of abrasion.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have already checked the eyes and they're fine. Lightning rod with stainless steel so no ceramic inserts to crack and no rough spots that I can find. The problems happened in farm ponds and fairly open water. No rocks and not in the midst of stumps or other heavy cover.

The line is flourocarbon "coated" and I wonder if it is the flourocarbon coating that is "peeling" or "shredding. That might explain that issue but there is still the issue of the knots breaking...

I've had one bad spool of 15 pound cx in the last 10 or 15 years I've been using that line for almost everything. Now, I can't say I have ever used 6 pound for bass fishing.

I've been using pline 15 lb and am having problems with it breaking. Sometimes at the knot and some times at the reel. Not sure if it was just getting bad from the heat or a bad spool. Trying to decide whether to respool with it or try another brand

I haven't experienced any of these issues.
