On a budget 5-6 will get it done, no problem. No $ concerns then it just depends on how big of an enthusiast you are.

I don't think 5-6 would be enough to be honest... Bait casters and spinning reels... Gear ratio not that big of a deal most of the time depending on the application, but line type, size, and all the different rod actions and lengths would make 5-6 not realistic. Now if you just going fishing with a buddy and don't own a boat then 5-6 will be plenty. Just my two cents. Then again I take about 15 rods with me anywhere I go... Not always a good thing though.

There are guys on the water that could beat me with 1 rod. Doesn't mean I'm only going to carry 1 though...
I find myself being more and more technique specific with rods and reels--10 plus. Doesn't mean it's right; it's just what I like.

If I'm a guest in someone else's boat I will take 5 or 6. If I'm in my own boat usually have 12-14 depending on the lake.

I tend to shop for versatile rods but there are certain techniques that require a specific power and action, like super deep cranking.

I can definitely get by with 6 but my idea number is 10 for what I need in a given day.

I've got a few technique-specific setups (swimbaits, deep cranking, flipping stick, etc.), but most of my rods are pretty generic. I carry 4 or 5 on an average day. 3 or 4 in someone else's boat. Don't think I've ever carried more than 6.

5 bait cast and 1 spinning and you're good to go.
For me it would be: 1 deep crank 1 mid/shallow crank w/ snap for quick changes 1 flip stick 1 jig/ dragging rod 1 all purpose med heavy baitcast (lipless/spinner/buzzbait) 1 shakey head spinning
I actually have 9 in the boat. Add to the above: Spinning for drop shot Baitcast for flukes Baitcast for topwater

Remember, "the one who dies with the most toys, Wins!"
I honestly think you could get by with 5-6 rods. The problem I run into is I have several combos that are identical but the reels have different line type as well as diameter.

I/we fish with 6, they all have bait casters. It works for us. It's about knowing how to use what you have.

I prefer multiple rods. Its just because I am a little lazy. I don't want to take the time to change out a lure when I am on the water. My inventory wasn't built in one day though. Start out with the necessities and add to it every now and then if you feel that isn't enough. I agree with jbcarroll3000, its not about right way wrong way, its about preference.

I roll similar to SAKS. It has taken me about 10 years to build the lineup I have now that consists of about 20-25 or so rods with only a few that are the same. For me it is about having the right feel for the particular bait. I use a different rod for different size rouges. Same with 4 inch swim bait as compared to a 7 inch. 1/4 oz trap and 3/4 oz trap on different rods. 1/8 oz bullet weight vs. a 1/2 oz. Line size used is also a factor. And so on..... Granted that I don't catch a lot of fish these days but man am I ready when I go.
