heading to a cabin with the wife this week for 3 night at beavers bend. Thinking bout taking the boat, any water hazards to be aware of? Any tips on what they might be doing right now? Is lake safe to run?

I Was up there a few weeks ago . We stayed in a cabin in Southern hills. Very nice and we will go back again for sure.
Main Lake is very deep. We fished mainly the upper end but launched on the south end. Pretty good run to the top so make sure you have a full tank. There are few gas stations with 0 ethanol which was nice.
On the upper end there's lots of underwater timber so stay in the river channel when running the big motor. lots of good points to fish with all the bends in the river. great top water in the morning around stumps. We caught mostly Kentucky's. Nothing large enough to brag about but it was a good trip.
Also bring a spinning reel and some light line for trout fishing in the river behind the dam if your on the south side. There are a few takle shops that sell tiny spoons if you don't have a fly set up. You can just use your spinning reel. I saw plenty of people in bathing suits with button reels catching trout up and down the river which tells me you don't need waders and a fly rod to catch trout.
Have fun. Beautiful part of OK.

Spent the last week of August there. Caught lots of fish on shaky heads, drop shot, spybaits and a few on topwater. Points, humps and islands with deep drops were the best for us. There was quite a bit of schooling activity when the lake slicked off. We saw more schooling fish up the lake than in the main lake, but the average size of fish was larger in the main lake. We caught all 3 species, with most being largemouths. I'd definitely try some trout fishing down below also.

I am local and fish the lake quite a bit. been catching schooling fish early and late. Already seeing fish school in back of main creeks. Also in the mouths of main creeks. Been throwing a gunfish, yellow magic and red eye shad. Been catching fish on grubs also. I also have nice cabins for rent. see deercrkretreat.com. If you want to have a great day of crappie fishing , give Doug Story a call. He has been catching 50 big crappie just about every morning. He just did a 2 day fishing show with Wally Marshall. Mr. crappie.
