I've decided to hire a guide to show me around since I've been skunked for two weeks. Swallowing my pride.

I've tried for months to find a crappie guide on Conroe. No luck, so I decided to go to Granger lake a few times. There are soe nice crappie at Conroe but it takes way too much work to find them.

"Try Butch Terpe at Stowaway Marina."
+1. When Conroe was a strong crappie lake Butch was one of the best on the lake. And you won't meet a nicer guy to fish with. Call him at 936/856-7080.

Yesterday I went fishing with Butch Terpe on Lake Conroe and I cannot say enough good things about Butch...but I'm going to try. He put me on fish almost immediately. I mean, within five minutes of leaving Stowaway I landed my first bass in weeks. Then he showed me another great spot where I landed another 2-3 fish, all respectable sizes. Then we went north to an area I'd never been before where I caught a really nice 3-pounder. So in the course of one hour I had caught more fish than in the last four weeks.
He took the time to explain the topography of the lake, making sure I understood where to cut across the lake up north and then took me to a few of his favorite spots where we both caught more fish.
The trip was just over 5 hours and was enjoyable from start to finish. I am grateful to Butch for showing me some better places to fish but also grateful he tolerated my non-stop chatting. I'd hire Butch again in a heart beat.

I was out today too. I used the GPS coordinates from this thread and found my way across the north end. As far as fishing goes - well, I've had better days (but not lately). I saw Butch's truck at Stowaways when I launched and when I did I thought to myself that it's getting about time for me to suck it up and have him take me out and teach me too. I'm certainly not above it and I certainly could benefit from it but never seem to remember it when I'm on dry land. Glad to hear you enjoyed it and learned some tricks too. Maybe I'm next?

I definitely recommend hiring Butch to guide you. He knows the lake, knows how to avoid stumpy areas and taught me how to use GPS to mark brush piles. He taught me more in two hours about Conroe than I could have learned in two years.

I've been fishing Conroe for years. I've talked to Butch about crappie fishing - not bass but think I will try that. I want to catch and re-grease not catch and release. Sorry! I'm all for conservation but I also believe in subdue and replenishing the earth (no political points here) but I waste not either. Thanks for the info.

Been fishing with Butch since the 80s, in his boat and in mine. He knows Conroe like few others. The man is a salt of the earth guy, and he has an awful lot of knowledge to share with the folks who will pay attention. When he speaks of Conroe, listen.
And if you go squirrel hunting with him, bring a scoped Anschutz Exemplar and some target ammo, and turn him loose with it on a few limb rats. You might see him actually get excited......
Tel him I said howdy.
