I've been using Danville 210 thread for all my tying, but I just ordered some Danville Mono, I've used it on a couple of jigs so far. It's tiny and hard for these old eyes to thread, but I like it! I also ordered some 140 Danville thread just to get used to smaller thread, I like it as well.

I sometimes put enough torque on my whip finish to snap the 210 denier flat waxed I use. I wish they made 420 denier in the same diameter as 210! Heck, they did it with braid! 20# test in a 6# diameter! Why not 500 denier strength in a 140 denier diameter? noidea

I love me some Danville thread and their 210 is great, but if using 140 I think maybe Ultra Thresd is at least as good, maybe a tad better strength wise. Mono is very interesting stuff and my friend that is a Pro Fly Tier and on the Whiting Team uses mono almost all the time. On reasons is he likes how it is when he puts glue on it because it's clear and the colors below it come through. I believe he uses bulk 6# maybe trilene?? I will have to check on that one!

I do use it at some my self.

I have heard of people using braided line, I may try some.
I tend to break Danville 210 a bit.

You could always try some Kevlar thread, LOL! I really do not know how big or strong it is, but it does exist. You could a,so try Ultra Thread in 210! I am not sure it's stronger, but sometimes I think their 140 is stronger than Danville 210. I use some of that and I do use a good bit of their 140.

However try some 6# Trilene or something like that, it's at least clear when you add your glue!

I've used the mono, don't like it as well as 201. I tend to break thread. I have some Kevlar, it's strong but it will snap also, and not worth the added cost. By far the strongest thread I've found is Nanosilk by Semperfli. Nano silk is very thin and doesn't provide the bulk I like in my jigs, but it's supper strong.

About a month ago I looked in to find something that some better. One of the things I was told is that now in the better threads a 210 is about 32 oz. test. Don't know how or who did the test but even 4 lb fishing line would be twice as strong if this any where close to right. I use 6 lb. clear stren on all of my rods and have a lot here so may give it a try tonight.

You know Skip, I think you're right! I think the Ultra 210 is stronger than Flat Waxed 210. I get my Purple in Ultra as that's the only way I can get that color in that strength and I've never had a break with the purple whereas I have had several of the Flat Waxed colors break at one time or another.

I also think their 140 is a bit stronger than Danville, but not sure it's as thin either though. You can get Purple in FlyMaster Plus and that is what I keep. The Fly Master Plus is just not a flat made thread like the Flat waxed is and nothing lays just like that Flat waxed for me. I do have a lot of both in the 140 though and a little in the Ultra, but the Ultra cost me a good bit more too.

However I also know it only take like 3 good wraps to hold a material down and lots of fly tying goes on using thread much thinner and so much less strength and they make it hold so I know we don't need the 210 to tie a jig and I do use some 140 and even a couple colors in Uni 6/0 because of color. Now that 6/0 is touchy for me. Heck though I have some tying silk too that I want to try as well I have some 14/0 thread I want to use. That kind of stuff is what you use for dry flies where weight is critical and number of wraps of thread is also critical for size. Am sure you have seen some called Spider Web.

Come to think of it, I believe my purple is Fly Master.

Vern the Fly Master Plus is made different and I have never really taken notice if it seems stronger than the Flat Waxed and it may well be. I have some other Fly Master Plus stuff I need to tie with some to see. I think that I have the FL Blue in both and maybe same size, so will give it a try soon.

I have done a little research on this, as myself and seems rest of you know so little. On your computer type in Fly tying thread tables. After looking these over go how far into it that helps.

I have tried many of these, probably a lot more than most have. I have used Ultra Thread in 140 and 210 and see they don't even list 210 any more. I don't see it at Hareline either which is where I sue to get it. I have also used Uni in 6/0, 3/0 and Big Fly, Veevus 6/0 which is pretty good for a 6/0 and not cheap. Danville, Flat Waxed in 210 and 140 as well the Fly Master Plus and even Monochord as well as their mono, Lagartun and have a few more I will just not go into. I still have some of each of these and more. I also have a bunch of Silk that I am not even counting and have several brands of it.

I still say first is Danville 210 Flat Waxed especially since I don't see the Ultra in 210 any longer and feel 280 will be a bit much as sometimes I feel the 210 is a bit more than it should be. After that probably the Ultra in 140 and then Danville in 140.

These tables are fine, but I feel what I feel from using the ones I have over the last 10 or more years. I still break 210 at times, but really it's not necessary!

Yesterday afternoon send out a few e-mails to folks from the past, have heard back from four of them this morning. They all say about the same thing: thread breakage is not from bad thread when I get it. What does cause this is rough hands from jig tying, letting the thread hit on hook point, letting thread get against jig head, cheap tools, and tying to tight. Thread needs to be firm but not tight.

Skip, there is some charts and tables for all threads that do list the 210 and bigger. The 210 waxed is by for the number one thread on the market as far as sales. Because it can be used for everything but there is a lot of things that other sizes or better if you have it. Will see if I can get a URL for a good one. Anyone use mono if a error mess. look for thread chart on error page
