I like your idea, but why not just tie a treble hook on the end of the line of a regular fishing pole, and just reel it up to the tip of a firshing rod (with a reel) Use it to snag the jug line, and if the jug has a big fish, you have a rod to bend and a reel to fight it with...

Just get an old garden hoe and break or cut the blade off, leaving the "hook" on the handle.

I took a broom handle and drilled a hole in the end of it and screwed one of those hooks used for hanging a bicycle in the garage. Works great.

Same here, except I walked over to the lumber dept and bought a 5 foot dowel rod (1 1/2" diameter).

This is my "hoe" handle. It comes in handy at times for beating snakes back, pulling boat off a stump, and pulling grape vines down to pick the grapes.
