I have a 2014 Nitro Z9 trailer. Just this year the brakes have started locking up while backing up on level ground (not the ramp). Therefore, I have to get out of the truck scotch the wheel then take the safety pin out of the tongue hitch (Nitros use the same pin for the tongue hitch and the backing mechanism) and pin the tongue to disengage the brakes. The first year I had no problems. I have replaced the wiring plugs on both truck and trailer, and it still locking up. Any advice as to whether its an electrical or mechanical issue? I have an appointment for annual maintenance, but that is another month off. Thanks for any help!

I had the same issue, Mine problem was with wiring on the truck.

I took it to 2 different trailer shops and they told me the issue wasn't the truck, Finally another shop found the issue, it was a simple fix for me.

Probably something wrong with the solenoid valve in the actuator. Your reverse light is wired to the plug on your truck, and when you put your truck in reverse it sends a signal to the solenoid in the actuator to close and not allow fluid to be pushed back to the brakes. Either a wiring issue or the solenoid is bad. You can replace just the solenoid if you want to.

Check the wiring, but this is the solenoid. You can shop around and maybe find a better deal, I just pulled up the first result. UFP Solenoid

I had the same problem on a ranger trailer. If you have changed the plugs it could be the ciliniod that is out. Also could be the fuse that makes the trailer reverse lights come on. My truck had a separate fuse for that. Check to see if your reverse lights on the trailer come on. Be sure they are releasing when going forward. My was not releasing all the way after it locked up and I damaged the rotors and everything. Good luck.

Check the fuse on your truck for your trailer brakes. Most likely under the hood or under your dash. Level ground or backing up hill will engage the brakes (force from the backing will engage them with surge brakes), backing down a ramp or downhill will generally not provide enough force to engage the brakes.

^^ this ^^
and if that doesn't fix the problem, you have a bad solenoid. Son's trailer did the exact same thing, luckily it was under warranty and they replaced it, cured the problem.

Another simple thing to check is the ground wire going to your trailer off of the wiring harness. I've had mine frayed, and barely hanging on and I would have intermittent problems with the solenoid.

pop off the little plastic cap on top of the tongue of the trailer and make sure that little metal lever is not locked. push it down and if it is locked it should come unlocked. fixed my problem on mine 2015 nitro z8

My master cylinder was out. It was an easy fix and I replaced the solenoid while I was at it.

Are your reverse coming on in your truck when you put it into reverse?

This^^^^^is the simple fix to rule out the tow vehicle being your problem. As mentioned above solenoid is the next place I would look. When electricity is applied to the 5th(reverse)wire in the harness you should hear a little "click" when the solenoid activates to deactivate the surge brakes while listening when someone steps on the brakes. Good luck.

I wanted to thank everyone for the help. Checked fuses and they are all good. Checked the metal lever on tongue and it is up. I have located the solenoid and will see what I can do to replace it. The reverse lights do come on Everytime it is put in reverse. Appreciate all the replies
