I have an 898. There is an update available. I have been tinkering with the image, and it's getting much better. However, the humminbird site recommends restoring factory defaults.
Does this mean my settings will be gone? What exactly do these updates do? Better picture? More crappie?

No professional, but depending on the update, they normally fix issues or bugs. You need to read what the update addresses.
If you return to factory defaults, you lose all your settings. I suggest either writing them down, or taking screen shots so you can get it back to where you were.

Also, export all your waypoints to an SD card as they may be erased also. Once the update is installed, put the card back in the slot and they will reload automatically. The updates will most likely change some menu options. For example, the menu option to export waypoints and routes will most likely change if you haven't loaded previous updates. Not a big problem but you may have to look around for the options as a few will no longer match what you have on the CD that came with the unit. Export the waypoints, restore factory defaults, load the software update then reload the waypoints. As TreeBass suggested, write down all your settings as they will be reset to factory defaults.

Dave I have the same unit, take a pic or a screen shot next time your out and post it here.
Your transducer could be set incorrectly or have interference. Those units are simple as the get.
