There is a pretty big pond nearby that I fish. It has a ton of perch and LMB, almost like every other cast you're guaranteed to get something on the line. It is really only accessible in two spots, and one of those spots is in the corner of the pond with some serious moss coverage. The moss is not only deep in the water but rises all the way to the surface.

When I was there the other day, there was probably a 10x5 foot area where there was a clear spot in the moss area. I casted a fake grub texas rigged in there and immediately a bass jumped out of the water at the grub. I tried to set the hook but I guess he never really got on. Repeated 10 times or so, had 4-5 more strikes but never could set the hook. I was thinking if I could just have a little bit bigger clear area to drag my worm I might get a chance to catch the bass, but not sure. Any ideas on what to do in this type of setting? I was going to go out again today and had a few thoughts: 1. grub or worm with a sinker, throw it in the clear area and let it drop to the bottom and sit for a minute, or 2. use a topwater frog and just skim it across the moss. Problem is the moss is so thick, if not for that one opening I don't know if the fish would even be able to maneuver around the moss to get to it.

My other concern is that my line is 15lbs braid and my reel only a 7lb max drag, so if I caught a 3-4lb bass and it got wrapped up in that junk, I'm not even sure I would be able to bring it in. Thanks for any help.

Throw the frog. They will get to it, trust me.

What is the weight of your rod? Light, Medium, Medium Heavy, or Heavy... Sounds like the rod could be part of the problem on the hook set. To limber a rod makes for a difficult time of setting the hook deep enough to penitrate the mouth.

15 pound braid should not stretch and should help set the hook. 7lb of drag is a lot of drag. Unless you have not tighten it down enough to be 7lbs.

Look at the rod and see what strength it is. Texas rigged plastics you should have a Medium Heavy rod to set the hook. Just my opinion.

it can't be anymore than medium, although it's like a $12 collapsible rod and doesn't have any rating. it's a cheap rod.

today I caught 7 fish, 6 bass and 1 perch. two bass were 4lbs (I have a scale) and two I caught with a frog were 2lbs. I caught most on a nightcrawler plastic (crawfish). I don't know what the terminology is but I have good braided line on half my reel, and the other half is some [censored] mono. well fish kept taking my bait today and I kept retying with a palomar knot. eventually I was casting half braid and half [censored] mono. eventually caught something and when I set the hook my line ripped at the knot. I kept fishing with my mono only and somehow caught my braided line. when I pulled it in I thought, hmmm wonder if that fish is still on it? started pulling it in by hand and suddenly there was resistance, then side to side movement. it was a fish! I know how strong fish are and knew reeling it in with only my hands could slice my hands up, so I grabbed my golf towel and used that as a reel. result was the 5lber in the pic below. awesome fun :))

Sounds like you're having fun, learn to tie different knots, that will help. Also, check your scale, seems like it may need to be calibrated, that pic is a two and a half to three pound bass at best. For trig use either flouro or braid to a flouro leader with an Alberto knot.

Thanks. So what is trig? I'm 6'6" and 215lbs myself so that may make the fish appear small. It was about 19" when I measured it.

Well you were right. Put a 5lb dumbell weight on my scale and it said 7lbs. Well, 3lbs is still nothing to be ashamed of smile

Nice one. The local pond I fish is the same way with the grass. I have been throwing a buzz bait and they have been smashing it.

When the grass is just on the surface the blade will slice through it and the bait will change directions kind of like a crank bait deflecting.

They can't leave it alone.
