I'm inheriting a 2007 lowe fm165 and was just wondering if I would have any trouble driving around in any of the bays around Galveston. It's 16ft long with a deep v aluminum hull. I don't want to launch it and run into trouble because of the wave height. Does anyone use this small of a boat In the bays? Any Info would be appreciated. Thanks.

It depends a lot on the weather, wind speed and direction. Because the bays are shallow, it doesn't take much wind for it to get pretty rough. Even 1-2 ft waves can make it pretty uncomfortable in an aluminum boat. Further in, in more protected waters, it's not so bad and there is still some good fishing to be had.

Other thing is, if it wasn't designed for saltwater...you will have a mess on your hands in a couple of years. That length of boat isn't horrible for bay use...the design deep draft of that hull is what will mess you over.

Not a fun hull in the bay.
First order of questions..
Does it have a galvanized or aluminum trailer? If "NO" then get ready to buy a new one. Painted steel trailers are dead after you dunk them in the bay.
That high sided tin hull will be aggravating, it's going to sail across the water like an empty chip bag, it'll be a chore dragging in and out to wade, so get ready for that.
Does it have all the little nice freshwater accessories? Troll motor, depth finder, lots of switches? Get ready to spend a few hours securing up all the electrical connections, unsealed butt connectors don't live long (especially bilge and livewell pumps).

Like pat said my concerns would be from how well the boat is set for the salt water corrosion.

That boat is lite has hi sides and doesn't draft too deep unless you have it loaded heavy. Fished out of one several times and they actually don't ride too bad in rough water. Fishing the bay will be a lot like fishing a big lake when the winds get up.

Thanks for the input. I have another question. Other than the trailer what needs to be sealed to help prevent corrosion and how would I go about doing that?

Liquid electrical tape all connectors and back of switches. Don't forget a bow panel and for sure remember your bilge area.
Carpet won't live long but good dose of scotch guard will help.

Any non stainless metal is going to give you trouble so gotta keep watch it'll corrode overnight.

Hopefully you'll start catching some fish and get a saltwater rig.
