I've read where several of you use this sharpener on your fillet knives. I'm thinking about getting one and I have a question. Is the Ken Onion version worth the extra money? Also thinking that it would be wise to order an extra set of belts?

Thoughts?

I don't use it but know a few that do, and they like it.

If I did go ahead and buy one, YES, I would keep a spare set of belts on hand.

I got the original about a yr ago. Best investment I've made for knife sharpening. I have a high quality Arkansas stone ( over 70 yrs old) and can get most blades razor sharp once the right bevel is there. I never believed a belt sharpener could sharpen a blade shaving sharp cause most belts roll a fine edge as one side of the belt will be going away from the knife edge instead of toward it. However, this set up does not roll the edge and will put a shaving sharp edge on any knife blade in short order. The original model works great. Having an adjustable angle bevel would be nice, but you can get the knife plenty sharp without it. An advantage would be for pocket knives that have thicker blades and you need to adjust the bevel for the thicker blade. Also the variable speed might be nice also.
You need to get a dz. extra of the ultra fine and medium grit belts. I wouldn't use the coarse on anything but axes, hoes, ect. You will use up the ultra fine belts quickly. You can get the replacement belts on Amazon fairly cheap.
Be careful as you draw the blade to the tip. Since the belt runs at fairly high speed, you can round the point of a drop blade quickly when using the medium belt.

I have never used the ken onion version but love the basic model. I have used the green belt on a super dull knife , but just a few strokes. It starts the edge again. My one advice is when pulling your blade through the guide don't put downward pressure on the knife just let it rest in the guide . It will cut into plastic with downward pressure.

Get an original model with some additional extra fine belts. You will love it.

I haven't used the original, but I do have a Ken Onion. If you do decide to get one practice on some old knives first and get the feel for it. Also read the instructions and run it on medium and light pressure at first. I went with the more expensive one because I wanted to use it on different knives with different bevels.
I have used it on most of my knives, I'm not ready to use it on my custom hunting knives, not yet anyway. But it will get um sharp in a hurry. And I do have an extra set of belts, but I'm still using the first ones. They will last longer than you think. I had plenty of opportunity to send it back, but I didn't, because my bride is hard on her kitchen knives. And this deal will knock them out in a hurry. Good luck with your choice!

Right now it looks like Amazon handles all of them. Probably where I'll get mine. I tried to copy and paste the page but I can't make it work. Just go to Amazon and type in WorkSharp and it'll have them all.
