I am making a trotline for the first time and I used youtube to help me put together a list of what I need.
When putting on the swivels for the drops, I noticed that trotline brads were used. I tried finding these at the local walmart and academy but I could not find any. Does anyone know where I can buy these? I live in downtown dalls. Also, is there something better that I may be able to find at the hardware store?
I am going camping this week and figured it might be fun to run a trotline but I have never used one. Are these usually just tied off to a tree on one side and weighted down at the other end? Or do you usually run them from shore to shore with both ends tied off?

Tie off on both sides of river with weight on both ends and the middle to keep line submerged. add bait of choice and have fun. Best way to fill the frezer.

I have fished several store-bought lines....and I have made some home-made lines as well. my two cents on trotlines....on the store bought lines larger fish seem to strip out the staging stops...I have used the brass brads to try and repair...they strip those too.
on my home-made lines...I used 1/4in nylon rope....and made my stage stops with a double knot on either end of the setting. I've never had these strip. I would also use the largest barrel swivels you can find. I use 1/0 ones. they seem to work well.
in texas state law states hooks must not be closer together than 3ft interval spacing. I would spread this out to 5 or 6ft. 3ft works.....but its a lot closer together than necessary. and if you were hook two better size fish back to back it can be problematic

Thanks a lot for the info. Double knots sounds great and that would save me from having to buy anything extra. Thanks a lot for the help!

I thread my swivels into the mainline and tie an overhand knot that leaves a loop with a swivel in the loop. I tie my drop lines by threading through the hook eye and then doubling the line and tying an overhand knot near the tag ends. This makes a big loop with a hook that slides around it. Put the end with the knot through the swivel and then pass the hook through and pull tight. I hope this descriptions isn't too confusing.

All of the info above is good information. The one thing I will add is trotlining is a lot of work for a weekend at the lake. If you live on the lake or fish it couple times a week and can maintain your lines it is perfect. If not I would suggest making you some 5 hook throw lines. Tie the main line to a stump with a piece of old bicycle tube for shock absorption and use a brick or other heavy weight on the opposite end. You can set these by yourself, and they are easy to run and pick up even whens it's windy.

Enjoy, be safe, good luck! Take 'em with ya when you're finished & save 'em for the next trip.
