A couple of weeks ago, Barry said on the show that stripers do not like a vertical presentation, unlike sandbass and hybrids. I had never heard this before. Anybody know why? Does it have to do with their depth and schooling activity?

The statement is just not correct. They bite just as well vertical jigging a slab or sassy shad. Or that is my experience. I have seen him tell the same about hybrids.

As fishing goes, Barry's a pretty good golfer.

In my days fishing for hybrids Ive found that a sequence of reeling in several times very quickly and then hitting the bail to allow the lure to flutter down to the the bottom again works well. on a normal cast you can do this six or seven times as you reel it in. Typically the hybrids will bite it on the "burn" when your reeling it in quickly. The sand bass however will hit it on the flutter back down.

This has been my best presentation for catching them on a slab or spoon. Of course there are many ways to catch them but I wanted to share my opinion.

Maybe we are just jealous. Who wouldn't want a new boat and truck and all the latest gadgets furnished so you could travel the country and fish all the beautiful lakes?

In my experience that works at times. Just as effective at other times:
drop the slab to the bottom. Pick the bait up and make a long "sweeping" motion with the rod. Then drop the bait back.

Lots of folks hop it. Slow sweeping will git you bit.

I disagree with Barry My most effective method. bass hole Barry is pretty good with blacks but with
stripers and hybrid and sandbass he has guides to do his shows.

Respectfully disagree with the Great Stokes. Fished many years on texoma with my brother in law, and caught our more than fair share of stripers using a vertical presentation, maybe we caught the only stupid fish in the lake, I mean, . . .

Well I'm a believer because in my only experience with stripers, I did not get a single bite slabbing the vertical way but I did with a swimbait worked horizontally. Granted, of course, I do not have tons of experience with stripers. Mostly sandies, very few hybrids and stripers. And when he said that it stuck out to me because I've caught so many sandies using vertical.

Berry is a better fisherman than me but I don't think I just dreamed that I caught all those stripers vertical jigging all those years. :-)

A hungry fish eats a slab or bait of just about any color and any presentation when placed in its face. Non feeding fish may be a little finicky. Saturday I caught fish on just about everything I threw at them. Caught fishing vertically, horizontally, backwards and forwards. It's different day to day. But feeding fish aren't picky. I believe Barry knows his stuff. But he's also trying to make a show. I think each show he's trying to give his perspective that's relevant to that particular day, season, species, and body of water. I don't watch his show trying to gain insight or new techniques. It's just entertainment.
