Headed out to Lavon Sunday bright and early with my old boss. A few Questions:

What is the best ramp to launch?

Can I run the lake freely without having to worry about underwater hazards? I have a shallow running boat.

Where can I buy some minnows (I used to buy them at a Fina station on Hwy 78)?

Not trying to steal anybody's secret spot or brush pile, but does anyone have any general areas that they would recommend we should focus on? North end of lake? South end? Certain cove? Certain bridge? Certain areas of timber?

Also, what depth has been productive?

Any particular color or crappie jig style? We are gonna try both minnows and jigs.

I don't expect to get a limit or anything but it would be nice to avoid Mr. Skunk.

Will post pics of success if achieved!

thanks for the tips!

If it were me I would hit the timber in the tickey creek area. Target bigger trees with more branches in the 15 to 22ft range. Start at 10ft and work your way to the bottom till you get bit. Remember what depth you get bit at. I hear a salt and pepper colored jig is working well. I have not been but that is how I would start. Hope this helps some

Thanks Fishin_Farmer! That is exactly the kind of info I was hoping for.

Also try the RR trestle around from the dam (Mallard). There are (was two wks ago) a lot of small bass and bait. Fish the bottom to get crappie. It may have changed since that was a couple of wks ago. Then fish the big trees back in there and do as Cody (Fishin_Farmer) says. They were at 16ft.

Well, it was a success. Maybe not by everyone's standards, but by mine it was. Ended up with 7 crappie total, all dinks, except for 1 that was just a 10 inch dink. Our biggest mistake was not getting enough minnows. I couldn't buy a bite on a crappie jig. I had a huge thump that broke off too.

All crappie caught near timber north of Tickey Creek in about 20 feet of water with the fish suspending at about 10 feet. Also caught about 4 channel cats while crappie fishing.

Went over by the power plant to see if any sand bass were biting and there were a TON of those little 6 inch sand bass schooling. We ended up catching tiny sand bass, largemouth, and even yellow bass. We finally left at about 1 pm when we realized that the fish were all 6 inches long.

Overall, a good day. Just can't wait to go back with more minnows and to hopefully find some larger crappie.
