This Friday me and a few buddies are going to spend the weekend fishing from kayaks at Texoma. I was thinking about putting in at Highport marina and searching out some catfish or smallmouth spots from there. From you more experienced kayak fishermen on Texoma, are there any other places you think we should put in at? And where do you think we should paddle to find the fish at?

Sounds like a blast. Ive had some luck between the islands with sizable cats. I haven't been since the flood so things may have changed.

Thanks Christian. I have heard that Highport is the best place to put in with a kayak right now. Do you think I should be expecting much boat traffic? I don't know if ramps are still closed or not.

The ramps are still closed at Highport, however, people are launching their boats from the parking lot. There is a lot more boat traffic on the lake, but nothing like it would be this time of the year if we were at normal pool. The lake is still 11 feet above normal pool, so the islands are still underwater. Guides are reporting finding lots of shad at Highport so the stripers will be there too.

Well we wont need ramps. Thanks for the advice. We will search for some shad to fish around those submerged islands. If we can't find any fish there then we will go ahead and move to Cedar Mills and fish in that bay, I think.

I launched at Granpappy yesterday. Marks large numbers of fish from Granpappy to butterfly coves. Caught one nice striper and some sandbass. All came on lures pulled shallow and very fast. Live bait would work better.

When you go to Texoma where do you guys stay. Where would you suggest staying for the weekend, do you camp out or get a hotel or cabin if they have any.

PaPa, my family owns an old cabin near Lake Texoma that I use when I fish there. It has been with my people for a few generations now. If you don't feel like roughing it, there are rent-able cabins at many marinas. I have stayed at a rented cabin at Cedar Bayou Marina, when my cabin was filled up with relatives, that was quite nice. If you wanted to save some cash (who doesn't?!) you could camp at Juniper point for next to nothing. They have public bathrooms and showers and a water spigot in the campsites. I have spent many night in those campsites as a child.

I always found I did a lot more paddling than fishing at Texoma. recently fished the islands and marked many fish, had a tough time staying on top of them with the wind and current.
