I bought a 1991 pontoon about 4 years ago. It came with two older model trolling motors. One works but is almost too short for the pontoon and the other is a Johnson motor that is a lot taller and would be great, but it doesn't work at the moment. Does anybody know what it is? I need to do some googling to get some info on it but I'm not having much luck just googling Johnson trolling motor. I just can't find a model number or serial number on it anywhere. The only writing at all is the big "Johnson" on both sides. That's it.

It is has a switch to switch between 12 and 24 volts. It also has three wires, red, white, and black. I tried all combinations of hooking them up to my battery, but couldn't get it to show any life.

It has 3 forward speeds and one reverse speed. The handle pushes straight in/out. I can't imagine what the purpose of that is. Anybody know?

What are the chances that it's something simple to replace? I've never taken a trolling motor apart and never really thought about them before. I haven't used one since I got rid of my little fiberglass bass boat. I just would like to be able to use it to help control my drifts a little better when drift fishing. I'm sure these older (pre 2000) model trolling motors will not go easy on my battery, but I also don't want to spend a fortune for a new one when I won't actually use them all that much.

The Motor was made by OMC. The handle slides back and forth for reverse/forward. The speeds are for both forward and reverse. As to what's wrong, would have to do some trouble shooting. Could be anything from bad connections to burnt motor. OMC when bankrupt years ago making parts for that motor very limited, if available at all.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. You said the handle slides in and out for forward and reverse? So why is there a 3 to the left of the 0 and then 1, 2, and 3 to the right of it?

I'll google it now and see if I can find a manual. BUt I doubt it since it's from before manuals were all online.

Thanks!

I believe it was a type of "high bypass"
