When do the egrets or white birds start roosting coming into the trees on Lake Palestine? I have heard you can catch lots of cats early morning under these trees that the birds are roosting in. Any advice on fishing under the birds?

Normally it's October before I start doing that here on Lake Fork. You can use chicken gizzard or livers. I prefer gizzards because they are durable. Weightless is good if there isn't any wind. A split shot and slip cork work best if there is a little breeze. Good luck and take a big cooler cause you're going to need it.

Most guys I've heard talk about fishing the roosts were referring to cormorants not egrets.

Any advice on fishing under the birds? I have a question. When you're under these trees/birds, do the fish you catch have worms in the flesh? The reason I'm asking is because, when I was crappie fishing back this spring I caught several crappie with worms in the flesh. I couldn't tell until after it was filleted. I would see these lil dark spots in the fillets at first I thought it was a bruise or something from the fish maybe getting finned from the other fish in the live well. Then I just happen to stick the tip of my knife in one and that's when I recognized these were worms (little long skinny & red). I posted this on the crappie page as well and the response I got was "this is a parasite the fish get from eating bird dropping". So I was just wondering if you guys see this in the catfish you catch when fishing under the trees with roosting birds?

I take my cheese bait and cast under the tree no weight and let sink and hang on.

So I was just wondering if you guys see this in the catfish you catch when fishing under the trees with roosting birds? Those are parasites that are in all fish. Has nothing to do with bird droppings.Just fry them and eat. Parasites in Fish Anglers sometimes report harvesting fish that contain worms, grubs, cysts, or lumps in the flesh, worms in and around the intestines, or a fungus growth on the skin, fins, or gills. Fish parasites are a normal part of the aquatic environment. Common fish parasites include tapeworms, black spot, and yellow grubs. While unpleasant to look at, the edible parts of the fish that contain parasites can be eaten provided they are fully cooked. Parasites are only a problem when fish are eaten that are not thoroughly cooked. Do not eat dying or dead fish. Thoroughly cook fish to a minimum internal temperature of 145F.
Snowflakes and entitled brats will be the doom of America!

If you eat fish very often then you have eaten some with parasites. Most go unnoticed and as stated above are perfectly edible.

I just talked to a guy that said what Blues said earlier. He said he has had better luck fishing under the black comerants. Are these also called water turkeys? Which bird is it that I need to look for come October to fish under?

Yes cormorants and water turkeys are the same bird. Just get close enough to the tree to cast under it. The bite should be almost instant. If you don't get bit reel up and cast to a different spot under the tree. Find another tree and repeat. Plan on getting hung up a lot, and use heavy enough gear to get the fish away from the tree quickly. These are just my opinions and I am sure other guys have different tactics that work well for them.

Not really. Just have to move a lot and find them. No need to tie up just cast a few times under a tree and move to the next one.

We had a island in the middle of Wright Patman that had nothing but white birds/tick birds on it the water was a ft. deep under the birds it was a great place to catch channel cat and flathead also.It never failed when you bait with worms you would catch channel in the day and flathead at night using worms.
