The jig is probably the most versatile lure out there especially when you start looking at all the different trailer types. You can swim em, hop em, drag em, stroke em, flip em and so on. I like to drag mine to where I feel every little pebble it goes over. Every now and then I may give it a little hop

Get you a few 3/8 to 1/2oz in black/blue, green pumpkin and something in brown. Go out and start catching a few on a Texas rig. Throw jig in same areas or same type of spots they ate the Texas rig. Get a few bites, know how they feel etc, get some confidence then start using it in your arsenal. Don't overthink it.

I make my own but if I ever buy a jig it would be a strike king tour grade heavy cover football jig for casting and a hack attack jig for flipping wood, grass, docks or other heavy cover. My favorite colors are Black and blue, Texas craw, Candy Craw, and Green Pumpkin red. As for trailers, during the summer I use a rage craw and during winter I use a chunk style.

drop it in the thickest or darkest cover you can find for big reaction strikes

This exactly how I learned. I would take my Texas rigged Havoc Pit Boss and get on a bite with it and have a second rod rigged with a similarly equipped jig to follow up with. That's a common 1-2 punch combo I use to clear a hole of numbers then quality. The larger fish are often less active and more inclined to bite on a bulkier profile bait, so I'd chuck the 4" pit boss in Okeechobee craw on a 4/0 matzuo sickle hook, with a 5/16 strike king tungsten weight in green pump sapphire glitter, let it fall next to cover, settle a moment, give it a tiny shake/scoot... pull out whatever decent fish are there, then follow up with a black/blue jig, 1/2oz, pit boss chunk trailer in same color, let it fall then give it a tine shake and usually get a bigger bite.

I always cover a spot I hook up with a smaller bait with a larger follow up bait, or something more reaction oriented than finesse. That's important in topwater fishing as well, especially in teams fishing when a partner can lob a fluke in behind a spook, I know Donald Harper on here is a huge fan of this technique, KVD has published articles to the same effect. Capitalizing on what bite you can find is incredibly important when you are fishing against the clock. Learning that will help get you culling instead of fishing for a limit in short time. fish

I will also say, bladed/vibrating jigs helped me develop even more confidence in jigs in general as well as swimbaits and even spinnerbaits.

I build my own jigs also and it is one bait that you can equip with all the senses that a big bass is looking for. To get a big fish to bite any bait, it must be as real as possible to sew up the deal.
- Head - If I want it to represent a Bluegill then it is painted that way and has as large an eye as possible. If I am fishing deep schools of shad then I want it silver diamond dusted. If they are after Crayfish then go with the dark green earth tones. I diamond dust all my heads with glitter to pick up any light reflection it can.
- I load the tail of the jig pretty heavily; so I get the sound by using a dome eye with a BB under the dome. Both eyes make great sound chambers. I use the florescent eyes which brings out the colors. If I really want it to sound off then I go with Brass eyes.
- I use Living Rubber to make the colors to match the forage and scent this rubber with either Minnow or Crayfish Extract depending on the forage that I am trying to mimic. I will spray the skirt every hour so it is leaving a scent trail in the water. I feel a big Bass will follow the bait and take it if it smells natural.
- I like the double keeper on the hook. One for the skirt to be hand tied and one for the trailer so it stays up tight.
- I also have all my trailers hand poured with the extract in the plastic and dose each bag so they are ready to put on the jig. I use a Speed Craw JR., Twin Tails and a Boxing Claw that floats.

Making it real will produce more big bites.

keep it simple, its a reaction bite you are looking for. I don't want a fish to see it that well, just want to surprise them and make them react. rarely will I spend the time to fish a jig back to the boat when flipping and pitching. dragging out deep is a whole other thing.

Short quick hops. Reaction strikes in our dirty Texas waters work well. I fish everything from 30' to 6" of water with jigs. A well balanced jig with contrasting trailer works well. I dont worry about Barbie doll eyes or matching Ken outfits. Bass aren't coming to a party, they are looking to eat.
If you are looking for a clear water bite, I would suggest a high quality swim bait

this exactly. ^^^

The jig bite is usually a reaction bite. Flip it, pitch it, cast it, whatever, BUT....always keep the line slack out and feel the jig throughout the fall. When it hits bottom, wait a few seconds, concentrating of feeling for ANYTHING out of the ordinary. If you don't feel anything, hop it a few times. If still nothing, you might as well hurry it back in and try another flip, pitch, or cast. 95+% of my jig fish take the jig on the fall. Or within a few seconds of falling or the first hop. Rarely do I catch one reeling it like a spinner. On occasion, I do get bit slow dragging one, but then again, it's probably a better choice to t rig something at that point.

You might want to consider using a finesse jig. I'd recommend a Santone Texas Finesse jig 5/16th or 7/16th oz. Green pumpkin with a few blue or orange strands. 16 pound fluorocarbon. Rig it with a small craw trailer or a double tail trailer. Fish the jig in and around anything thats in front of you. Keep it wet and you will get bit.

War eagle Hvy finesse jig in greenpumpkin/orange. Keep it simple and and let the fish tell you how they want it fished. The main thing is keep it wet.
