 How To Estimate The Weight Of A Fish From Its Measurements

This formula is from TPWD and uses a bass as an example, however - according to TPWD this formula will work for all fish (Which I kind of doubt for EVERY fish, but maybe for most of them)...and without much further ado here is how to measure a bass and work out it's weight.

You will need to have the length and girth of the fish to calculate an estimate. This formula works for all fish, although the example is for largemouth bass. To get weight in pounds, square the girth in inches (girth multiplied by itself) then multiply this times the length in inches. Divide this product by 800.
For example, we can use one of the recent ShareLunker bass. The girth was 20.25 inches and the length was 26 inches. First, take 20.25 x 20.25 to get 410.06. Multiply this times 26 to get 10,661.6. Divide this by 800 to get 13.33 pounds.

My way's a lot simpler...look at the fish, hold it up, calculate approx weight by sight, then add a pound for story telling purposes.

My way's a lot simpler...look at the fish, hold it up, calculate approx weight by sight, then add a pound for story telling purposes. Funny thing about my fish is that they grow a lot faster after I've caught them than they ever did before I caught them. Give me a couple of years and a five pound bass can grow to fifteen pounds if it was an ounce.
