On day 6 of my first batch of soured grain. Went with chicken scratch due to package size, cost and variety. Has been sitting in the sun but not much smell yet. Keeping an in inch of water on top and it has been bubbling.

I was expecting it to sour faster and smell very bad by now from all the info I have read. Does chicken scratch sour slower than plain old milo? Added a cup of sugar to it today to hopefully speed up the process. Have a fishing trip planned for wednesday!

Adding beer to the grain will hasten the process.

It's ready, go fishing.

Pasteurized beer will not help.

All I used to do is get a 5 gal. bucket and fill it half way with milo or corn, then fill the bucket with water just enough to cover the grain, then put it where the sun will be on it all day. It will sour but it takes a few days. You may find something in the bird food line that will work.

i use feed wheat.

Yup, I use feed wheat also. I throwing maybe a drop or two of molasses or a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, then throwing a couple teaspoons of active dry yeast.

I use milo, water, yeast, and leftover shad. Good soured grain will turn a 15" gizzard into just a backbone in under 24 hours.

I also cover the bucket with a black trash bag when I need it to sour faster.

Fishing not going as expected with he chumming. Chummed around a few boat docks last week and fished 3 hours with 2 friends and only 1 under flathead caught. Went out on Lake Austin yesterday and chummed several areas where creeks feed into the lake and caught no cats.
I guess I was expecting them to be circling the boat! Going to give Granger a try Friday and see if my luck changes.

Can't chum with it, doesn't work , that type you have to put in some kind of bag like a burlap sack and keep there, it'll slowly draw in catfish, use to do it all the time with my dad, we'd fill up a burlap sack and sink it and tie it to a tree and come back week or 2 later and wear out channel cats also you can use a 5 gallon bucket and drill small tiny holes all over and sink it and tie it off to something, using sour grain you have to leave it and it's a baited hole, and also you're throwing it in freely to sink to the bottom In which the catfish are eating and getting full. Serving free dinner.
