One of my goals this year was to spend time exploring Lake Somerville for Bluegill and Sunfish. I began exploring the shorelines by both bank fishing and kayak fishing about 3 weeks ago. Up to this point I have covered around 3 miles of shoreline, including Overlook Park, Yegua Park, part of the dam and Twin Island.

I found small long ear along the banks just about everywhere. I found colonies of bluegill at Overlook Marina, both sides of the boat ramp points at Overlook and Welsh; in cane breaks along the dam and all around Twin Island. I found the bluegill in areas of hard bottom clay, gravel sand bars, cane breaks and vertical structure. I also found 3 colonies of small green sunfish.

The lake has receded 5 feet in this period of time. It's been interesting seeing the type of structure they were holding on being uncovered at 3 inches per day. I even found them holding on the concrete park picnic tables that were under water.

Most of the fish are small though. 5 to 6 inch long ear, 6 to 7 inch green sunfish and 7 to 8 inch bluegill. The biggest bluegill have only been around 8.5 inches.

In general, the fishing has been much better than I expected though. I'm catching large numbers of fish using the fly rod and a very small, white Betts popper. I also spent some time using live red worms. The ones I have caught on live bait haven't been any bigger though.

I'll keep exploring, hopefully I'll find that colony of trophy fish on the lake one day.

Thanks guys, It's just as much fun exploring as it is catching fish. Just hope to find some bigger fish.

Always fun dissecting some water and a bonus of seeing the structure they are relating to.

I fished that lake a lot in my younger years while going to Blinn College. Lots of Crappie and White Bass in that lake. Nice post and thanks for sharing.
