Speaking of small local shops... Belinda & Todd have a small place out back at Lake Fork and she makes baits with input from local anglers. I think Ken Gaby had input into BES (Black Emerald Shiner). I like the emerald part, they put some kinda shad looking sparkly glitter in it. Gives you confidence when it looks just like the shad they are eating. lol I also like anything with blue, so I rigged some up last week that have the color of a little bream. I prefer to fish with bigger baits, but they like more finesse in summer and winter. So I went with slab bugs and even L'il Frys on light line. I had to take my boat out for a test run, so dropped a jig or two on my home lake. Sunrise on the Lady... Like I was saying, light line, tiny bait... choked it Went back to 12# braid though for most of the fishing... Caught a few fatties and headed home.

One thing about Lavon which may be true about your lake also. We have been very, very low and even closed due to drought over the past year or so. Then the floods came, which also closed the lake. The spawn this year was freaking EPIC. There are shad, crappie and sand bass fry EVERWHERE. Sometimes your graph is almost blacked out. I caught a zillion 4 crappie and a few weeks ago, caught 4 crappie on a ounce chartreuse slab while sand bass fishing with a buddy. It was weird, open water, ounce of lead and a freakin 4 crappie hits it. Not just one, but a half dozen or so as we were drifting in ~20 of open water. So. What this means is next year, the lakes that had this drought/flood scenario are going to have a million, billion 10-11 fish and then two years from now, 12-14 fatties. Fishing and even different lakes go in huge swings and cycles due to early spring, late winter etc., but this drought/flood will drastically impact our fisheries for the next few years. All the weeds and bushes that grew during the drought are now productive cover and a massive nursery for all the fry to grow and eat and be safe. Im looking forward to 2016 and17! lol Good fishing!

Nice job. I too have run into lots of little crappie. Once they get some size it will be on!

great post and thanks for the promising report. I hope to be spending some time on Lavon in the coming years. I just hope we can get some regular rain fall amounts and the lake doesn't go 20' low again. WIth Bois D Arc Reservoir on the way and the reserve lake in Leonard, I hope it helps with the water fluctuations on Lavon.

I had the same experience out at Lavon, A TON of small fish. Could barely keep the bait in the water. Especially with the sand bass.
Caught a limit of 4' crappie. Only like 2 keepers last time we went out.

I've found the same to be true at Bardwell. Got out Friday and Sunday and caught many very small fish before finding the keeper size. I caught a zillion 4” crappie and a few weeks ago, caught 4” crappie on a ounce chartreuse slab while sand bass fishing with a buddy. It was weird, open water, ounce of lead and a freakin’ 4” crappie hits it. Not just one, but a half dozen or so as we were drifting in ~20’ of open water. So…. What this means is next year, the lakes that had this drought/flood scenario are going to have a million, billion 10-11” fish and then two years from now, 12-14” fatties. Fishing and even different lakes go in huge swings and cycles due to early spring, late winter etc., but this drought/flood will drastically impact our fisheries for the next few years. All the weeds and bushes that grew during the drought are now productive cover and a massive ‘nursery’ for all the fry to grow and eat and be safe. I’m looking forward to 2016 and’17! lol Good fishing!
