Which reel casts, easier/further, etc? Conventional round baitcasters or the low profile?

That's a good question. I personally make more consistent and longer smoother casts with my low profile Curado's and Revo's than I do with my old 1970-1980 vintage Ambassador 5000's. However, I have a Round Pro Rocket and a C-4 that I can cast just as far, and they are smooth reels. I have to be watching it close with those, or I will have a backlash that one could take a patent out on. I feel like I have more control on the Low Profile styles.

Properly tuned they will all cast much further than one needs for normal fishing. The larger round reels have the ability to cast further due to line capacity.

I'm looking for something that will throw light baits like spinners and such, probably in the 1/4-5/8 oz range. I'm wondering if there is much difference in the low-profile reels and say a 4600 Abu.

I have a low profile Shimano Curado, and a Core, I also have a round Shimano Calcutta. I can't tell much difference in the Curado and the Core but they both perform head and shoulders above the Calcutta when used as you are describing above. I use the Calcutta mostly for cat fishing and slabbing.

I got both. The low profile reels `do better on light baits. The Abu 4600 is hindered by the engaged levelwind. I hot rodded my 4601 with ceramic pawl, roller bearing levelwind and cog gears but my stock Lews, Revos, and even pfluger handle the lighter baits better. The 4600/01 size works great on big swim baits and spinners
