Question: Those of you that fish with a UL spinning rod, what length do you prefer?

I have a 4.5' and a 5' with Shimano 1000s on them. They are a ton of fun, especially if you get into a school of white bass.

Psalty, Smurfs, Bob, thanks for the replies. I have one that is 6' I normally use when fishing out of a boat, and have a 5' I've been using in my float tube. I like the 6', ,but I think I may have a little better casting accuracy with the 5' and also like it when I use a slip sinker.

I have a shakesspeare Micro series 7'6 UL spinning rods and a 7' light I use for jig fishing, probably the best rods for the money, less than 20 bucks each

Thanks for the reply Joser. Seems people use a broad range of lengths, based on these replies.

There can be many favorites and methods. It can also be what you feel more confidence in all condition i.e. bank, kayak, tubes dock/pier etc.
The favorite for me in all situations is the 5'6" if that was my only choice for UL Spinning,in this case when targeting panfish.
Other lengths are also confidence based and what coverage you may have to contend with.
I also feel that the shorter length even 5' is a good place to start the young'uns.
Of course that's my feelings. gumshoe

The longer rods will improve casting distance and feel. But I fish in the kayak and in creeks so I prefer the 5.5 ft. Ugly Stick GX series rods. I give up some feel but I haven't broke one yet, knock on wood.

Daiwa Presso or St. Croix panfish for true ultralight experience, no comparison IMO!

Up to about a year ago, my favorite was the Bass Pro Shop Micro Lite 6' L power one piece rod. I have many rods from that series (four in all) from my trusty 6' one piece up to 7'6" UL two piece not to mention a 9'6" ML float and fly rod they make and they are all excellent rods. I consider them to be the best bang for your buck rod out there for panfishermen. Live bait, jigs, rigs , slip bobbers and fixed bobbers; if you fish one or any of these rigs, the Micro Lite series has a rod for you.

About a year after we got back to the states (two years ago) I bought a St Croix Panfish series rod, model PFS69ULF (6'9", UL power, Fast action, one piece). It is the best panfish, specifically bluegill, rod I have ever fished with. And I have fished with a lot of rods in my search for sunfish. It fishes like it was designed with the sunfish/crappie fisherman in mind in every aspect of the rod. From the end results of the product I've been fishing with, they must have had the right panfishermen in R & D and really did their homework and due diligence. I liked it so much that I bought the PFS70LXF (7', Light power, Extra Fast action, one piece) this Spring although I haven't been able to fish it as much as I want. I use the 6'9" rod for jigs 1/16th and under, lighter split shot rigs, weightless rigs and small fixed float rigs. I use the 7' rod for jigs 1/16th and up, heavier split shot rigs, tandem rigs, larger fixed float rigs, slip floats, elbow spinners, crappie size swimbaits and pitching. Both rods can pull drop shot duty, but I still like my BPS Micro Lite 6' rod for that. Seems like a lot of different tasks, but I have had to find different ways to fish for my sunfish since we move so often in the military and all the places we've been have been on such wildly different ends of the spectrum when it comes to the different rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes.

To put it short, the 6'9" St Croix Panfish series rod is a gem and the length I prefer in open water/boat/fairly open banks situation. If I'm fishing thick bush or close quarters, I reach for my 6' rod.

Thanks to all for your replies. Interesting to see what all of you are using and make comparisons of what I use and what you guys use.
