For the last year I have been very occasionally trying to learn how to sling a fly. I rarely spent more than 30-45 minutes at it because I'd get so irritated at not being able to cast more than 5 feet. I end up switching back to my spinning gear and catching fish like usual.

Today, I went out with nothing but my fly rod hoping to give some smallmouth buffalo a shot. When I showed up at the river I could see stripers feeding on the surface and changed my quarry. Within a few minutes I was finally shooting line 30 feet. Only a few casts were pretty, but I was finally throwing a heavier fly far enough to fish. End result: my first four stripers!

What a feeling of satisfaction that must be! Well done to ya.
And the thing that I have embraced about the sport is, there's always something to learn, always somewhere for me to improve.
May your journey be so.

Well done...there is nothing like feeding stripers to get that line out, LOL.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll be looking for lessons, just haven't had time/money yet.

Where are you located? There are some classes planned at Eisenhower state park (Lake Texoma) on Sept 19.

I am in the Waco area. I may be moving out of state in a few weeks though, so its kinda hard to plan for that time period at the moment.

I just started fly fishing about 2 months ago. I wish I had learned when I was a young kid. It puts fishing in a whole new perspective. I am feeling more comfortable just packing a fly rod and enjoying catching more fish than with my bait casting equipment. Fishing is a life long learning process and the more you fish the more you learn. The best thing i did was to have a one on one class with Stephen at Backwoods on 7th in Fort Worth. He spent an hour with me teaching me techniques on casting and all about the fly rod and reel. It was only $50 and I learned a ton about fly fishing. It sure jump started my fly fishing experience. It is the best $50 investment I have made in my 60 years of fishing.
Enjoy your new found hobby!
