So if you have an HDS with a built in antenna then what is the purpose of having the additional antenna ??

ahh that would make sense. I was curious because I bought my boat a few months back and you can see where the extra antenna was mounted. He took the antenna but left all the HDS's. I knew the HDS's have a built in antenna so I was wondering why he had the extra also. How much are they?

It could be that the additional antenna was a Point 1, which also has a compass. The compass will give you a correct bow heading all the time, not just when boat is moving.

I assume you're referring to the POINT 1 antenna? It's main purpose is it has a compass which keeps the arrow always pointed in the direction of the front of the boat. For example, let's say you pull up to a brush pile and the wind is blowing your boat north but you are facing south... the built in HDS antenna would show your boat facing the direction your boat is heading not where it's pointing.

Real world application: you can waypoint that brush pile, when you get blown off course you can immediately find it again without having to search for it because the arrow is actually pointing in the right direction. No need to have to use a marker buoy to show all the pot lickers where your spot is.

It's also double the speed. Cost is about $129, I think.

Does this help?

The little arrow infuriates me sometimes as described above. Never know where you actually are unless you are moving the boat with TM. Find myself going in circles to stay on a spot. Wastes time.
