I will be in Galveston near the beach in a hotel for a few nights next week along Sea Wall Boulevard. I would like to target some redfish, speckled trout or ladyfish. I will be using my 7/8 wt with floating line. I'd like to fish the surf or flats; pretty much anything that's available and close. If you guys have any spots, tips or good flies to use there, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would love to help you but my last attempt at salt water ended up with me taking a beating from the waves and being chased by an alligator(FL). Im only 4-5hrs from Galveston so I would also like to see what others who know what they are doing have to say.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

There are a couple books on Amazon about fly fishing the Texas coast. You can read some excerpts about the areas around there.

I went in June and didn't fish much (about 2 hours) due to the Tropical Storm Bill. So much for my one vacation of the year.....over a year.

Open your eyes & look within, are you satisfied with the life youre living.

No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life. Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.

It's been 13 years since I lived in the area but I used to fly fish all over Galveston Island. Here are some places that I used to go, again, disclaimer, not sure how things are now but use to have good luck fishing these areas.

This is San Luis Pass. As you approach the bridge you can pull off to the right or left. You make a right turn, you can drive parallel to the channel and park on the point and fish the flats and the edge of the channel. Sand can be deep and easy to get stuck. You go to the left before the bridge, you hit the beach for surface fishing as well as the channel too.

I circled the area you can park, then get out and wade fish the shoreline. This was a great spot in November after the first cold snap for flounder and reds, but you can fish for specks here too.

Use to be able to park here and get out and wade West Bay.

All of these areas is knee to waist deep water. The water on the back side in West Bay was normally very clear. Typically threw chart/white clousers or a shrimp pattern for what it's worth.

Good luck.

Sorry for not replying sooner; haven't been on in a while.

The surf was very rough the last couple days and it poured most of the morning today. So far, I have only one fly rod and it has floating line which doesn't pair up well with the ruthless waves. I tried to fly fish the surf, but it was kind of pointless. Also, lots and lots of wind. Unfortunately, the flats you suggested along San Luis Pass were too far away from my hotel. Those flats do sound and look very good though. I wish I could have tried them, and thanks for suggesting them.

But... here's the worst part, and I'll admit it: I used cut squid on my spinning rod. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. And it did pay off too: I caught several gafftops, redfish, a black drum, and a spanish mackerel off of the sea wall and the surf. Tuesday the surf was the best with many schools of fish and birds diving down all over, giving the fish away.

I just returned today. Thanks for all the responses and help. I just wish the conditions would have complied a little better for fly fishing. In all it was very fun, and the water didn't have any seaweed!
