Some friends of mine who fish up north say that fishing a drop shot rig under a bobber is a new, little known trend that some of the panfisherman in Minnesota and Wisconsin have been using to catch sunfish and crappie on some of their more weedy lakes and ponds. Anybody ever try this out or heard any feed back from it? The little lake I've been concentrating on lately is almost carpeted with coontail and other vegetation and I think this rig might help me catch the bigger ones I saw during the spawn when we first PCS'd here.

Jagg, I saw a YouTube video recently where that rig was being used. Probably would be good in places like you described. I imagine the leader length would be the key.

Sounds like a great way to adapt to your conditions. Nothing wrong with trying something new as I've recently learned.
That said, I just recently started fishing the drop shot rig because I had always been old school and resisted trying something new since my old way worked for me.
After trying the drop shot I'm now hooked on the technique. I like being able to detect the bite much better than the old way. thumb

Just one more cast!

I always keep my pole set up with a drop shot and add a bobber if I want to lift it off the ground. Throw one pole on the bottom, rig another with a bobber 1.5 from hook and one 3-4 foot from the hook to find out where they are hitting at.

Actually using a bobber on a drop shot is a very old way to catch panfish. I used to buy the pre-tied wire spreader type by the dozens. That style almost disappeared but seems to be making a come back.

Yes, I've seen and used spreader or Kentucky rigs for as long as I could remember but I would say that the drop shot rig is in a different class since it is much more finesse and most often hook tied directly to the line and not spaced off with a loop knot or wire spreader. To me it is a similar to comparing a 1/32nd jig and plastic combo to a 2/3 arm Alabama rig. Just my 2cents
