Evaporation for July = 11.22 inches, which equals 26,000 acre-feet or 8,472,136,400 gallons or about 0.93 feet.
Water Released Downstream by the SRA for July = 528.4 acre-feet, which equals 172,143,000 gallons or about 0.02 feet.
Water Pumped by DWU for July = 2,259.1 acre-feet or 736,126,000 gallons for the month or about 23.75 million gallons per day on average. This equals about 0.08 feet of water or about 1 inch for the month.
So, evaporation was by far the major source of the lake dropping in July, but I was surprised to learn that DWU pumped as much as they did. I figured they would pump a couple of days just to run the pumps, but a couple of days should only equal about 180,000,000 gallons.
The bottom line is the lake receded by just about 1 foot in July with over 90% of that due to evaporation.

Someone will be along shortly to refute that with a dark and more sinister reason. In all seriousness, great info. Thanks

Bruce, good stats.
I don't recall where I first saw it, I believe it was data on Lake Athens, but that lake and another nearby east Texas lake have about 50" of water loss owing to evaporation each year, on average. It seems one was 49", the other 52".
So, of course, one would expect a hot and dry July, like this past one, to be one of the biggest draw downs over the entirety of a year.
If we have a similar statistic around North Texas for August, I would think once temps moderate and we get back into rainier weather in the fall, the lakes should be in super shape over the winter and at least early next year.
Could this fall and next year shape up to be a super productive fishing year? Hmm???

I'll refute it... Me nor anyone I know personally saw any water evaporate... I think the Devil uses it to keep cooler down there

Thought they wouldn't draw from fork unless the other lakes were too low.

The lake has awhile before it turns over. We need consistently cold nights/days.

I've been trying to convince people that this is true for all lakes being pumped by DFW; I live almost on Cooper so I see a lot of water go away, but like it was stated they'll be someone come a long with a more sinister plot..........I didn't used to believe this but after I read some of the data about evaporation and built a fish pond in my landscaping that I have to refill weekly I began to realize just how much water get evaporated..........
